Former Ankeny Christian Academy guard Ben Lyon was one of the better freshman in the state last season with the Eagles.
But after some consideration, he and his parents decided a switch to play ball with Ankeny would be an appropriate move.
The 6-foot-3 guard played significant minutes last season as a freshman with the Eagles, and spent his offseason playing with a very talented Kingdom Hoops Elite 15U squad.
Though he has received some exposure, Lyon has yet to see any recruitment come his way — he’s OK with that, for now.
“I’m not really worried about recruitment at this point, when that time comes I think I will be,” said Lyon. “Of course it’s every kid’s dream to go play college ball, and it’s still my dream, I just haven’t quite got there yet. And I’ll just continue to keep working hard and continue to improve and get to the that next level.”
Lyon — who is equally adept at running point guard or shooting guard — explained to PHI what his style of play is.
“Personally I love to get to the rim, I like high-percentage shots. I’m really good off the dribble, I can take people and go score. I really like that 15-foot pull-up jump-shot too,” said Lyon.
“One area I tried to improve on this offseason was my ball-handling, and being able to break people down off the dribble — as a point guard that’s pretty important.”
With his great size, and solid skillset, Lyon is capable of guarding many positions, and offensively will be a versatile threat for the Hawks.
“I would probably classify myself as a combo guard, because I like slashing off the wing as a two guard or a three guard. And because of my height I usually end up guarding a forward or somebody taller,” said Lyon, who will play with the Hawks’ sophomore squad this season.
“My goal for this year is to dress varsity by the second half of the season, along with a couple of my other sophomore teammates.”
