Sanford Pentagon News Release
MITCHELL, S.D. – The Mike Miller Foundation today announced the complete schedule for the sixth annual Mike Miller Classic. The Classic, presented by First Dakota National Bank and Sanford Health in conjunction with the Mike Miller Foundation, will be held from December 28-29 with games tipping off from two of the top basketball venues in South Dakota – the Corn Palace in Mitchell and the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls. In addition, this year’s event will feature the addition of a memorial that will feature college teams for the first time in Mike Miller Classic history.
The Corn Palace will showcase Session 1 on Dec. 28 and Session 2 on Dec. 29, while the Sanford Pentagon will host Sessions 3 and 4 on Dec. 29. This marks the second straight year the Classic has been held in multiple locations after expanding to Sioux Falls in 2014.
Nineteen schools from nine states will participate in the two-day festivities. Eight schools will represent the host state of South Dakota, including two high schools from Mitchell (Mitchell High School, Mitchell Christian High School), three high schools from Sioux Falls (O’Gorman, Roosevelt, Washington), as well as Ethan High School, Bridgewater-Emery High School and the NAIA’s Dakota Wesleyan University, based in Mitchell.
Three schools from Minnesota, hailing from Minneapolis (Patrick Henry High School, DeLaSalle) and the greater Minneapolis area (Prairie Seeds Academy), in addition to schools from Florida, Kansas, Nebraska, Nevada, Tennessee, Washington and Wisconsin will compete in the event.
The complete schedule can be found below or by visiting .
The 2015 edition of the Mike Miller Classic will feature the second annual “Coach Gary Munsen Tournament,” named for Miller’s renowned former coach. The first two games of the Tournament will tip-off during Session 1 on Dec. 28 at the Corn Palace with defending tournament champion DeLaSalle taking on Sioux Falls Washington and Mitchell High School squaring off with Woodinville High School (Wash.). Two more games, including the Coach Gary Munsen Tournament Championship Game, will take place at Sessions 3 and 4 on Dec. 29 at the Sanford Pentagon.
Coach Gary Munsen is one of South Dakota’s most prolific and successful basketball coaches, having coached boys’ basketball for 46 years, including 42 as a head coach. He served the final 39 years of his career as the head coach for state-power Mitchell High School, where he guided the Kernels to 34 state tournament appearances, 18 Eastern South Dakota Conference titles, five state runner-up honors and nine state championships. Coach Munsen ranks second in South Dakota state history for boys’ basketball coaching wins.
This year, the event also will see the addition of the “Doug Martin Classic,” in memory of former Dakota Wesleyan University basketball coach Doug Martin. In addition to Dakota Wesleyan, colleges from Florida (Florida National University), Kansas (University of Saint Mary) and Wisconsin (Cardinal Stritch University) will be participating with two games to be played during Session 1 on Dec. 28 and two games during Session 2 on Dec. 29, all at the Corn Palace.
Coach Doug Martin led DWU to four conference titles (1990, 1992, 1995, 1997) and an NAIA Division II National Tournament berth in 1995 during his 17 years with the program (1988-2005). He was named conference Coach of the Year three times (1990, 1999, 2001) and, along with his father Rod, became part of the first father-son duo to be inducted into the Wisconsin Basketball Association Hall of Fame.
The sixth annual Mike Miller Classic will conclude with Sioux Falls O’Gorman hosting powerhouse Findlay Prep (Nev.) in the Session 4 finale on Dec. 29 at the Sanford Pentagon. Findlay Prep has posted a 252-17 record over the past eight seasons, reaching the National High School Tournament Final Four six times and winning three national championships in that span. Coached by Andy Johnson, Findlay Prep has had 10 McDonald’s All-Americans, while nine Pilots have gone on to play in the NBA.
