After breaking onto the scene during his sophomore season in which he propelled George Wythe HS to a 26-3 record (12-0 in conference) and a state semifinal berth, Malik Johnson has his sights firmly set on a very specific goal.
“I'd like to improve defensively, go undefeated, and win a state title,” Johnson said.
It may seem like a lofty prediction, but given his performances last year for the Maroons, Johnson's prediction doesn't really seem too far-fetched. He understands it will take a collective effort to replicate and perhaps improve on last season's success.
“We just gotta come together as one, and have better team chemistry,” he said.
At 6'4, Johnson is a combo-guard who has an excellent blend of size and skill. He is comfortable as the primary ball handler, and often makes advanced reads. He also has a very good stroke from the perimeter. He is an underrated rebounder as well.
“I feel like I have an all around game,” Johnson began. “I can score the ball. I can pass the ball. I can do a little bit of everything. Anything the team needs.”
While his recruitment has gone mostly under the radar thus far, that is likely to change given his recent progression. Johnson has worked to improve various perceived weaknesses.
“My defensive game has really improved. I've been working hard on that. Virginia Tech coaches have said they like my shooting, and ability to score the ball. They said they would like to see me get tougher, stronger, and improve defensively. I'm working hard on that.”
In the classroom, Johnson is a standout. He owns a 4.0+ GPA. Academics is very important to him when looking at schools.
“When looking at schools, academics comes first.” he said. “If they have a good program, that will help also. But I want to go to a school with a good academic program.”
Malik Johnson is heading into his junior season with some major momentum, and is certainly a name to keep an eye on.
