Barnes was a factor on both ends of the floor for OLSM. He provided energy D, especially early. Barnes finished the game with 11 points and 4 boards.

Barnes finished the game with 11 points and 4 boards. But what stood out yesterday to me has been a constant with this talented team first leader. It was Barnes’ defense. He was tough to beat 1-on-1 and he managed to pick up 4 steals in this game. Defense translates and it will be fun to watch him lock down in college.

The Western Michigan commit is well known for his elite perimeter defense, but it was probably his offensive contributions that stood out the most. OLSM needed him to be aggressive offensively and he rose to that challenge. Barnes showed that he can play with both physicality and finesse. He started off his scoring with a pretty catch and shoot corner triple. Barnes got really active in the 3rd quarter attacking the rim on the left side with bulldog type drives. He powered up finishes through contact and got to the line.

Barnes has been a top notch defender since he stepped into high school. He’s done nothing but build on that over the last few years. Barnes can play D in the open floor and can also get stops in the half court. He has the frame needed to body an opponent and get physical stops.

Calling Barnes an “elite defender” probably doesn’t sum it up for this young man. I can see him developing into a perimeter stopper at the next level as well. Barnes is physical defensively and is willing to out grind his assignment on that end of the floor.

There will be a very smart D1 coach somewhere that will be very happy that Barnes is on their roster. Defense translates to the next level and Barnes is one of the best perimeter defenders that I’ve seen, and not just in Michigan. His defense was critical to OLSM’s state title run and in a sometimes offensively dominated grassroots season, Barnes will still be shutting people down.

Barnes is a big name player that brings an even bigger defensive game. It’s not about points scored for Barnes, but about points not scored against him. He’s one of the most talented 2 way players in the state.

Barnes was a huge reason for OLSM’s terrific season. He’s a leader on both ends of the floor and picked up big stop after big stop on D.
