I really liked the overall growth that I saw in VanderWaal’s game this summer. He has really soft feet and good body control for a high school post player. VanderWaal once again showed that he can take over on the glass. He’s become a definite perimeter threat as well with a much improved jumper.

VanderWaal was excellent at the Hillsdale Elite Camp. He showed that his game is extending from the post. He’s so much more than a sturdy post defender now. In fact, he’s showing a very high and very exciting ceiling. I liked the way he got out in the open floor and was able to finish on the move. VanderWaal did dominate inside as well, one time going up and literally stealing a rebound and turning it into a second chance bucket.

VanderWaal was definitely a standout last weekend. He showed soft feet with great balance. VanderWaal was incredibly impressive on the defensive glass. He was strong on the box out and showed strong hands when securing the ball.

VanderWaal has easily been one of the most impressive post players in the state this grassroots season. He’s gotten bigger and stronger and has really learned how to dominate the paint, both with points and on the glass. Maybe the best improvement that VanderWaal has made has been how comfortable he is with the ball in his hands.

VanDerWaal made a statement with the West Michigan Premier team at the NY2LA Next Level event. He just simply dominated the paint. VanDerWaal was a walking and talking points and rebounds double-double. In fact, I’m pretty sure he averaged a double-double over the course of the weekend.

NorthCoast Premier was defeated by a very good OPS UA Rise team, but VanderWaal (amongst others) still stood out for his quality play. Looking at a box score from the game, he scored 16 points on an eye catching 75% shooting from the field. Vanderwaal added 8 rebounds to his stat line as well.

Vanderwaal turned a lot of heads with his play over the summer and will continue to do so this winter. He has potential and the type of game needed to average a points and rebounds double-double in high school play. Vanderwaal is a true 2 way player that brings a ton of energy and effort to the defensive end. He will make it tough for opponents to score close to the rim this coming season.

I was really impressed with VanderWaal when I saw him this summer. He can put his back to the basket and score with focused post moves toward the rim. VanderWaal was steady and reliable whenever I saw him play. He showed a nose for the ball off the rim.
