Owen Stearns
About Owen
Expert Analysis
Robbie Hodin | Prep Hoops Scout
Stearns is electric. He has never-ending confidence and a knack for scoring the basketball. He gets major elevation on his shot and has a super high release point, so he can get off mid range looks or threes whenever he wants. He’s also a relentless rim attacker who can finish athletically at the rim and with lots of contact. He can certainly take some questionable shots at times, but he’s a tough shot maker and proves himself right pretty often. Stearns was awesome for Set The Pace HGSL this past weekend and should continue to have a productive spring with them.

Stearns is a lead guard with good positional size. Like the versatility he brings to the game. He scored the ball in different ways and showed that he can make a three if he is given space. Liked how he is able to play off of two feet when he is around the paint. Stearns made the most of crashing the boards and scoring off of 2nd chance efforts.

A repeat junior by way of Rhode Island, Stearns continued a hot start to the year with an explosive 35-point outing in Great Barrington’s thrilling win over Redemption Christian. With 26 first-half points before missing time in the third quarter with a banged-up ankle, he showed comfort from all three levels while staying consistently in attack mode. The Rhode Island native displayed smooth mechanics with a textbook high release while knocking in seven 3’s and a handful of other midrange attempts. He complemented his shotmaking prowess with knifing downhill attacks into smooth finishes while showing budding athleticism in open space. It was a performance that served to announce Stearns as a clear scholarship-level prospect now that he’s moved into the 2027 class.

Stearns, a wing out of West Warwick, has helped his team to 13-4 record and the #4 spot in Division II. A big time athlete on the wing, Stearns is a one man fast break and can go for 20+ on any given night. He does a nice job of getting to his spots in the mid-range off the bounce, showing the ability to rise up and finish over the defense with a high release point on his jumper. He runs the floor really well and shows a great understanding of how to utilize his length as a finisher around the rim. He defends in space, rebounds above the rim, and has a good feel for jumping passing lanes. West Warwick is in a great spot heading into the postseason and should be able to rely on Stearns to have a few more big scoring nights this winter.
