Last weekend in Memphis, Mendez was quiet. He started his second E15 session in KC quite differently. Opened the scoring for the game with a baby hook from about 8 feet in. Then kept active, including dropping the hammer as a roll man. It was a good step forward for the youngster, as his post scoring and overall more confident play helped anchor a Friday night victory for LeGYnds.

Mendez’s freshman campaign was a success, as he helped anchor a Class 3A semifinal runs for his squad. Including making key plays on both ends of the court in State Tournament victory. There’s lot to like on Mendez, with good mobility for his size. And the ability to hit the occasional mid-range or three pointer. Is at a stage of developmental where he should look a completely different play in six months, hopefully starting to complete dominant Oklahoma high school level games. Especially if he keeps working on his explosiveness and a mindset to “dunk everything” around the rim.

Mendez is a promising freshman and had good moments throughout. Had a couple defensive plays where he was imposing around the rim. An early block, then quietly one of the most pivotal plays in the game. With Rejoice trailing in the final minute, Mendez deflected an alley oop pass, leading to a steal. On offense he reached double figures. Including a good stretch in the third, where he hit in the mid-range. And when he got deep position on the block with his soft touch, he’s incredibly hard to stop. Very good long term ceiling.

Mendez has missed time this November due to a foot injury, but a healthy Mendez will make a BIG impact for a Rejoice team filled with talented guards. Early highlights from this summer indicate that he’s going to start high school with an impressive skill level. Guards are capable of playing off of him due to his passing to cutting teammates or open shooters. Has promising shooting touch from around the rim to the mid-range. One of the prospects most eager to see this winter.
