Eric Wallace | Prep Hoops Scout
One of the state’s top available guards, Byrd finished with 16 points and delivered a big second half in a narrow loss to Gillian Academy. The senior combines quickness and strength in the backcourt and impacts the game as both a scorer and facilitator. He creates offense effectively off the bounce, gets into the lane to collapse the defense, and is a confident shot maker with range beyond the arc. Byrd’s ability to control tempo and make plays down the stretch stood out in a competitive matchup.

Byrd has left an impression on us every time we’ve gotten eyes on him this fall and I don’t expect anything to be different this weekend in Lanham. The lead guard is one of the premier bucket-getters in the state and I’ll expect his approach to be the same as he looks to make a statement against a Bethel Academy team with some stingy guards on Saturday afternoon.

It was another showing for Byrd handing out buckets in bunches as the dynamic lead guard essentially got to wherever he wanted before scoring in a variety of ways. Using a mixture of change-of-pace dribbles combined with the gravitational pull that he demands with his extended range, Byrd relentlessly attacked his defender to get to his spots in the mid-range. He plays with great balance and strength within his base as he stops on a dime. If a help defender steps up in time, he has the burst to get all the way to the rim and initiate contact that forces a ref’s whistle. Byrd plays with a great understanding of maturity, control, and balance when it comes to getting his own. S3 finished 2-0 overall on the day.
