Expert Analysis
Michael Roth | Prep Hoops Scout
A top multi-sport athlete in southwest Ohio, Welter hasn’t skipped a beat going from football to basketball. A powerful athlete at the rim, Welter was throwing down some crazy dunks off alley-oops on Friday night. A physical force in the paint, Welter has the size, explosiveness and aggression to make highlight-reel plays on both ends. If Welter had a little bit more offensive skill he would be one of the best bigs in the region. It’s no surprise looking at the frame and athleticism of Welter that he’s a highly sought after football prospect.

When I first found out about Welter in June for La Salle, I was immediately impressed by his size, athleticism and hands. He was honestly a bit too good to be a total under the radar sleeper so when I saw he had Division I offers on the gridiron, it made sense why I hadn’t been aware of his basketball talents. Welter was just offered by UTEP and he’s currently fifth in the GCL-South in receiving yards.

A two-sport stud, Welter holds multiple Ivy League offers on the gridiron. I was really impressed when I caught him for La Salle in June on the hardwood. Welter plays above the rim using his big frame and strong build to score through contact. Also a high motor for rebounds, Welter is a physical force that’s tough to account for. Overall just thought Welter did a lot of productive things for a big and while his future is likely on the gridiron, he would be a monster small college basketball player if that was the path he chooses.

A new name for myself, Welter is getting looks from Division I football programs in the Ivy League and MAC. On the hardwood, I was really impressed with what Welter showed me on Friday for an experienced La Salle squad. That experience allowed them to run a crisp offense where Welter scored off screens curling to the basket and using his soft hands to catch and finish. An impressive athlete too, Welter threw down some dunks in the half-court. Welter should be one of the most productive bigs in the GCL-South as a senior and would be worthy of small college basketball recruitment as well.
