About Matt
Expert Analysis
Jason Johnson | Prep Hoops Scout
The most gifted player in MIAA D2 with great knowledge how to draw fouls (at least 4 fouls drawn) and to get good looks at the rim. He worked on both ends of the floor especially taking Oliver Ames 2nd option away leaving him with 6 points. Matt is very smooth and explosive whether shooting or driving. He got his shot off a couple different defenders and continued to place heavy pressure on the defense to box out when the shot went up or force the help defender to step in.

A true scorer leading his team in points but has other leadership skills. Smart passer, mixed bag of dribbling moves and a rebounder for a guard. Quick with the ball and getting shots off in a hurry. Navy commit is getting a good one who can lead his team to big game wins.

Gaffney put an end to his recruitment with a commitment to the United States Naval Academy. A prospect that drastically improved his stock this summer, Gaffney was one of the most impressive performers in the Hoop Group Showcase League. A shot maker and shot creator, he does a terrific job of running an offense. He’s gritty, tough, and not afraid of the big moments. He’s a tough scorer in the mid-range, has the ball on a string off the bounce, and can really push the pace in transition. Defensively, he’s ultra competitive, does a great job of guarding at the point of attack, and is an impressive positional rebounder. Navy secured their lead guard of the future and a prospect that has the skillset and competitive fire to grow into one of the top guards in the Patriot League.

Gaffney, now a three-time state champion at Malden Catholic, capped a dominant summer by being named the MVP of the Hoop Group Showcase League. A winner through and through, Gaffney’s stock skyrocketed this summer after he proved to be one of the most competitive lead guards on the east coast. He has a tight handle, the ability to create space off the bounce, and can hunt his own offense when he needs to. He’s a good athlete that can stop on a dime, elevates quickly into his jumper in the mid-range, and makes great decisions with the basketball. He has in-the-gym range and a quick trigger on his shot. Defensively, he’s a high IQ, gritty defender with good hands. He went from a nice prospect to one that now is, at minimum, a Division I recruit with multiple scholarships to his name and, presumably, more on the way this fall.
