Expert Analysis
Ryan Morgan | Prep Hoops Scout
Holcomb is a highly skilled “big” who can play all over the floor. While he does a great job getting shots off from just about any spot on the floor, he’s also been a valuable presence by the rim, deterring shots, rebounding, and then looking up the floor quickly to find runners. He’s had several great outlets to leakouts and is having a diverse impact on the game so far.

Holcomb is a unique breed of player that brings a combination of size and skill you won’t find in many other guys across the state. At 6-foot-9, he can defend the rim and wall off the middle of the floor, but he can also knock down shots at a high level and create matchup problems on a nightly basis. He’ll either need to put up some big numbers or elevate his Union squad to make a run through districts to get some consideration for this award, but he’s going to be a guy to watch either way.

Holcomb’s a kid who can shoot the 3, knock down blanketed midrange shots, and come down on the other end and send shots packing. He has great length (now 6-foot-9) and showed a good glimpse of his defensive ability last weekend with WC Renegades, stuffing shots in by the rim, using that long reach to get tips on passes and strip the ball loose on drives, and just eat up a ton of space around the painted area to make entry difficult for the opposing team.

The tall guard/forward has a great stroke, especially from the midrange, and because of his length, can shoot over tight contests. He has the type of shot-making that can bail out bad possessions and gives him the option to rise and fire in congested areas. He’s also a guy who will get up and block some shots, can take up a lot of real estate on the defensive end, and has the handle to get to his spots and work his way in close to the basket. He’s with World Class Renegades this spring and adds to a talented bunch with his size and skill.

Holcomb came on the scene strong this year, scoring in a variety of ways and showing phenomenal shooting ability for a 6-foot-6 guard. He is yet another player on this list that will have more shots coming his way next season and should be able to capitalize on the growing opportunity. Holcomb is already a pretty well-rounded scorer, but like King, should be able to do some work this off-season to improve his physicality. He’s a guy that shows good instincts, an ability to make plays on the defensive end too, and could end up being a key playmaker, not just scorer, for the Union Titans next season.

Holcomb is a prospect with a high ceiling, having the length, instincts, and shooting touch to be a real problem on both ends of the floor. He could still stand to add some meat on his bones, but the sophomore wing already puts in the effort to mix it up on the glass and can guard multiple positions on defense. He’s been a key guy spreading the floor and rebounding this season and has been a huge part of Union’s success early on.
