Expert Analysis
Ryan Morgan | Prep Hoops Scout
Sumner has been rolling as of late, winning 11 of 14 games in the new year with an average margin of +13.0 points. Hyppa is a big part of what they do, showing some great space creating moves outside to free himself up to knock down threes, but also playing the role of playmaker, moving defenses and finding quick passing windows off the bounce. He was instrumental in their recent win over Skyview where he also showed the reactions to steal the rock when ballhandlers played loose.

Hyppa didn’t see many shots fall on the offensive end but he still made an impact with his defense and hustle. He got on the floor several times for loose balls, getting pokes while on the ball and selling out for steals. He also showed some grit when working through screens to stay with shooters or try to cut off driving lanes.

Hyppa was a big riser toward the end of last season and has kept right on going through spring. He is an athletic guard who continues to show more and more diversity on the offensive end; pairing a nice long-range stroke with some creativity off the bounce and at the rim. He could take a big leap forward with Sumner this winter and is a rising name to watch in the 2025 class.

A rangy, athletic guard who can get it done on both ends of the floor, Hyppa has all the tools to take the next step and break out next season. He can get downhill in a hurry, gets hot from 3 and has shown extended range at times, and also brings it defensively. Hyppa was a second-team all-league selection this past season and could very well crack that first-team next season.

The Sumner guard is an active player on both ends of the floor, can make the highlight plays with steals and runouts, but also just plays a tough overall style of basketball. He has the ability to find a rhythm with perimeter shots but also has good length and athleticism to attack the hoop.

Hyppa was a little quiet early in the game but turned it on in the second half and ended up taking over in the later moments to seal the victory against Kentwood. The lefty guard is 6-foot-2, pretty athletic, but also plays longer than he looks with some good burst and anticipation. He showed he can bury open shots from mid-range to 3-point, has a couple of go-to moves on the perimeter to create space, and has the potential to be the teams heartbeat with his competitive fire. He forced three key turnovers to start a run that helped his team reclaim the lead late in the game, then hit two free throws with under 20 seconds to play to put their lead at three.
