The talent has always been there and it appears the senior urgency might be setting in for Johnson. Went on a 7-0 run by himself in the third quarter. Ran the floor hard, and was too strong on finishes at the rim in transition and halfcourt. Hit a triple as well during that stretch. Johnson has a lot of natural tools with height and athleticism that few can match. When he locks in like that second half spurt, Memorial can play with anyone in the state.

The still growing Memorial Charger had the flashes of his big time potential and athleticism during both days. On occasion he’d break out a move to the basket or slam that’s rare for a player with at his height at now 6 foot 6. But he was too up and down. Johnson has 5A All State type potential, and to become a priority for regional JuCos. In order to achieve college success, he can not be as anonymous as he was for large periods of times like he was in games watched this weekend The ceiling is great, but the floor must become higher for Johnson.

Johnson showed promise as a junior, which was his first extended run of varsity action for the powerhouse 918 program. And now has used this spring as a launching pad. The scoring wing has added to his on the ball skills, turning him more into a scoring guard. Especially as he’s more nimble with his movements to knife through the defense. And has started to add explosiveness to his profile around the rim. The Chargers are expected to be contenders in 5A and Johnson is a big reason why.

After a promising end to his junior season, Johnson is experience a strong spring with a more fluid off the dribble game. That was evident in the first half against Holland Hall. He showed more poise and skill with a hesitation stop and finish against one of the top athletes in Oklahoma. The ceiling is there for Johnson to be an 5A All State quality player for a Memorial squad hungry to start at new State Tournament streak.

Johnson had a “he’s on fire” moment in the second half of the Mindset 17U win. He went back to back to back on three pointers from all over the court. Including at least one that was from college range. The junior has flashed good shot making skills from three over a couple different viewings over the last few months. Along with the barrage of second half threes, he also hit a good 18 footer that set up with a pump fake, and one dribble to relocate.

Johnson is a taller, long armed wing prospect who seems to be coming into his own at the right time for the Chargers. He continues to be an interesting prospect with the way he can eat up ground on drives with his long legs, while also slipping by defenders. But on the night he was not limited to being a scorer first player. The junior made fantastic, quick thinking passes to teammates on drives. On the night, he filled the stat sheet with 12 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. The future looks bright for Memorial with a strong 2025 class, but if Johnson can continue to grow the future could also be now as they’re one game from a State Tournament appearance.

At a recent practice, Johnson passed the eye test with height, good wingspan and promise as a perimeter player. The development of the junior could be the wild card for how good the Chargers could be. At a minimum he looks set to help provide rebounding and presence around the rim on both ends of the court. But if he can provide a reliable scoring punch, Johnson could help raise the ceiling of the inexperienced squad.
