Expert Analysis
Will Armishaw | Prep Hoops Scout
Byther, who had a terrific spring and summer with Black Bear North, has a chance to be one of the top players this winter in the MPA. A big, strong, two-way forward, Byther is a skilled player that doesn’t mind doing the dirty work in the paint. A versatile forward that can score at all three levels and even shows the ability to create off the bounce, he’s hard to guard when he gets downhill. He’s a good athlete that has the ability to rebound in traffic and in space, often doing so at or above the rim. Offensively, he shows great pursuit of the ball on missed shots. Defensively, he does a good job of being athletic, utilizing his frame on quality box out, and just doing whatever it takes to get the basketball. He should be among the top rebounders in the MPA this winter and is a potential all-state selection for Old Town.

Byther made his presence known early this spring on the AAU circuit with Black Bear North. A talented forward with a strong frame, Byther has a versatile skillset that allows him to impact the game in a variety of ways on the offensive end of the floor. He’s capable of taking smaller defenders into the post, can knock down shots from behind the arc, and has a good feel for the game with the ball in his hands. Simply put, he just consistently makes the right play. He’s a quality defender that rebounds well and holds his own physically in the paint. He should be on the radar of D3’s throughout New England and could play his way higher with a strong season at Old Town.

Byther has the body of a D1 tight end; he’s 6-foot-5 and incredibly built. He’s most impressive on defense, where he showcases really solid lateral movement and hands for his size, and great timing on shot blocks. Offensively, Byther can finish at the rim and is very unselfish. Apparently he can shoot, but he didn’t let it fly much when I watched him. Would be surprised if Byther doesn’t end up on a D3 roster somewhere as a solid two-way big.
