Colby Giacubeno | Prep Hoops Scout
One of the premier scorers in PG County this season, Walker helped lead a Wise team to a 14-7 overall record as they came up short in the regional title game to the then undefeated CH Flowers Jaguars. The southpaw scoring guard thrived in the Pumas’ up-tempo style which consisted of full court trapping presses that forced turnovers and chances for quick buckets or transition opportunities. When in the half court, Walker possesses good burst off his back foot to gain advantages in driving lanes and has good athletic pop to play around the rim. He was a capable shot maker from deep off the catch with time and space, rebounds at a plus rate for his position and did a nice job of adjusting to opposing defensive schemes to become more of a playmaker for others in stints. As a result, he got an 8-spot improvement in the final ranking from No. 66 to No. 58.

Despite the tough overtime loss to Laurel, Walker’s spectacular senior campaign continues as the southpaw guard went for 40 points, grabbed eight rebounds, dished out three assists and blocked two shots in the effort. Walker has been on a tear as he remains in the top spot in points per game for the state of Maryland. He’s diligent in his efforts running the lanes as a result of Wise’s up-tempo approach thanks to their run-and-jump press, but even in a halfcourt setting defensively, he has great awareness of when he needs to help on the glass or noticing there is no safety to start the break early. He caused fits last night at the high post against the Laurel zone defense, lived at the free-throw line and even converted on a couple of three’s to reach the 40-point mark.

Dion has been one of the most explosive guards in PG County this year, and his stock keeps rising because he brings rim pressure every time he steps on the floor. He has been a constant downhill threat with the size and speed to turn the corner quickly and finish strong through contact. What’s stood out as the season has gone on is how he impacts the game without needing to settle, staying aggressive in the paint and consistently creating advantages for his team. Dion has also shown he can help control possessions on the glass as a guard, grabbing tough rebounds and starting transition chances the other way. Continuing to show his is built for big moments.

Walker leads the state in scoring averaging over 30 points per game and has Wise in the thick of things, as the Pumas usually are, with a 7-3 record. Walker is fresh off a 33-point outing last night against Flowers and much of his scoring attack starts with their relentless full court trap and frantic offensive pace. He’s the top man on the press and records steals in bunches thanks to his active hands and cat-like first step in the passing lanes. He gets to the rim quickly in straight-line fashion with good athletic pop off one foot to make it tough for opposing shot-blockers. The style and emphasis that Wise forces their opponents into should not only allow Walker to maintain his impressive individual season, but also put the team in strong position to make a run in the Class 4A state tournament.

Dion was a blur on the fastbreak in a high-level PG County school matchup. Got virtually wherever he wanted on the floor and made the defense look a bit helpless at times. Dion used his size and speed to shoot by the defenders in both the open court and the halfcourt. If the defense did not stop him on the drive he took the ball all the way to the cup and finished the play strong. Shot decent from range but didn’t have to settle for many jumpers. Dion was also a key rebounder for the Pumas and collected many critical rebounds to finish off possessions. Overall, Dion efficiently willed his team to a big victory over a rival opponent and did not shy away from the moment.

Dion was lethal all summer long as a consistent scorer. He played with District Basketball Club across multiple events and made a statement with his offensive execution. Dion impressed as a 3-level scorer against some high-level talent. Had games where he was able to dissect the defense and score at every area on the floor. Got to the line way more as a slasher during this summer run. A lot to like from Dion’s quickly improving game.

24p 7r (5/7 3P) vs WeR1 HGSL
-Thought that Walker did a great job of showing that he can space the floor as a perimeter shooter this week without gunning too many shots. Walker, already a dynamic scoring guard that uses a deceptive change of space to get to his spots in the halfcourt, took the right shots while remaining aggressive in his trips to the rim and by extension- to the free throw line. Love how he is activated and motivated by the trash talk but responds by fighting for efficient looks on the offensive end and ramping up the ball pressure on the defensive end. His stop n pop jumper from the midrange is absolute money and he’s great at contorting his body around the rim to score over bigger/more athletic defenders. Should be one of if not the best players in PG County Public this year.

16p 7r 1a 2s vs Blake
-Struggled from the field but impacted the game on the glass, grabbing several big offensive rebounds and forcing up a putback that earned him several trips to the free throw line. He is devastatingly-effective in transition on the ball as a deceptively quick guard that has a bevy of offensive tricks in his bag. He uses side ball screens well and is a pretty automatic midrange shooter but has really worked on his scoring touch in the paint to be more of a threat from 8 feet and in. Although he is capable of making 3s, I want to see him take and make more of these looks as he shoots the ball at a pretty high level and that shooting ability will be what earns him an opportunity at the next level.

-Walker had a really strong season in new threads under a legendary coach at Wise HS in PG County. A prolific scorer in the halfcourt, I really loved watching his creativitiy when his defender ostensibly had him in a bad spot to see how Walker would utilize a spin, hesi, hang dribble, or up fake to get to his spots with ease. The midrange jumper is pretty automatic and he can score over a variety of defenders with pretty limited air space. Looking forward to seeing him on the circuit .

The lefty combo guard was electric performer for The District Basketball Club in the game against Boo Williams . Scoring 16 points in a variety of ways on the floor. Showed a polished game. Spacing the floor, attacking downhill, and effectively dictating the action. Comfortable hitting shots off the catch or bounce. Solid defender and capable rebounder. A name to know. Athletic guard who plays with patience and maturity. Scores efficiently at all three levels, using his strength to finish through contact and his touch to hit tough shots. Brings a steady presence both ends.
