He immediately showcased his speed and explosiveness, generating early fast-break layups through leak-outs, long rebounds, and paint touches that set the tone from the opening tip. His handle proved nearly impossible to disrupt, quickly countering pressure with behind-the-back and between-the-legs combinations that routinely left defenders behind. LaFell remained unselfish with the basketball, consistently making the right read and throwing teammates open with outstanding playmaking instincts. Defensively, he fought over screens, denied space at the point of attack, and consistently cut off driving angles. His next-level toughness stood out just as much, responding to physical play and hard fouls by attacking even harder, highlighted by an emphatic statement dunk moments later. He finished through heavy contact with ease and showcased impressive defensive versatility by fronting the post and denying entry passes after switches.

Terrific offensive engine, very intentional and deliberate in his approach, doing everything with purpose. He had a blur of a first step, touching the paint whenever he drove. His finishes came behind an incredible layup package where he was able to score with either hand. LaFell had a counter for every way he was defended, using smooth euro steps and cross-steps to finish through traffic while adjusting acrobatically midair to offset shot blockers. His penetration created openings for others, allowing him to wrap around or drop off dimes after getting defenders off their feet. Naturally elusive, he snaked in, out, and around defenders like they were cones, getting to any spot on the court at will. Defensively, he was an aggressive on-ball talent with excellent anticipation, effective lateral quickness, and next-level toughness as he fought over screens. He shut down one of the best ball handlers on the court, making him completely ineffective with his defensive instincts.

One of the top leading scorers on the EYBL circuit, averaging 21.3 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 3.6 assists, carrying his team in all three categories, a true all-around floor general.

BJ LaFell is one of the best 2029 guards in the Houston area due to his impact on the game at the offensive end. He competes with intensity, generates points, and creates tough looks at the basket. He uses underrated athleticism to beat opponents to the rim, create his shots off the dribble, and draw contact fouls. LaFell pressures opposing ballhandlers into constant turnovers due to relentless intensity and he can function at either guard slot due to having a multi-tool skillset. He breaks down his matchup in the half court and uses a smooth and quick first step to get the jump on his defender and score from anywhere on the court. BJ continues to show why he is so highly ranked in the class of 2029 for Texas.

BJ Lafell BJ Lafell 5'9" TX was one of the top players I watched from Shadow Creek High School that played a pivotal role in the Rice Team Camp evaluation. His offensive skillset was evident throughout the games I evaluated. Lafell consistently generates points by swiftly driving to the rim in transition and half-court situations. His athleticism shines through as he bursts with speed towards the basket, showcasing his finishing ability during transition plays. Defensively, Lafell is a relentless pressure player, often forcing opposing guards to pick up their dribble in the half-court, disrupting the offensive flow. He ranks #9 on our Prep Hoops list for the 2029 class. 

Lafell has emerged as one of the most productive offensive players in the EYBL, averaging 21.2 points per game. He consistently creates offense off the bounce, gets downhill effectively, and has shown the ability to carry a scoring load. His aggressiveness puts constant pressure on opposing defenses.

Brandon Lafell Jr. is a highly regarded freshman guard for Shadow Creek High School that recently had an impressive season. His team made it to the third round of the playoffs, defeating Hightower and Summer Creek High School. In his first playoff game, Brandon showcased his skills finishing with 20 points. He demonstrated agility and quickness, effectively maneuvering his way to the basket in transition and half-court offensive situations. His ability to outmaneuver defenders and create scoring opportunities for himself on all three levels is truly impressive. Against Summer Creek, Brandon continued his impressive performance, scoring another 20 points and contributing to Shadow Creek’s comfortable victory. As time progresses, Brandon Lafell Jr. is undoubtedly a player to watch closely as he continues to develop and excel on the basketball court.

Sits down and defends, applying defensive pressure on the ball that made his opponent uncomfortable with their dribble. He excelled as a ball hawk tracking loose balls and won 50/50 balls with blazing speed and quickness. Lafell’s handles are incredibly tight, this kid had the ball on a string even when he looked like he would lose control he quickly regained his dribble and made a play out of it.

One of the most talented freshmen in Houston, BJ LaFell makes scoring look easy. He came away with 13 points and had his way at the rim on offense. He is an aggressive perimeter defender and can bully the opposing matchup into multiple turnovers. LaFell has good speed in transition, and he makes sure not to waste open looks at the basket on the perimeter or in the paint. He also has underrated leaping ability to block shots in the paint and knows how to scrap when it comes to loose balls. This was my second time getting to watch Brandon and he definitely deserves to be on radars all around Houston.

Brandon Lafell is a lethal fastbreak and transition scorer who thrives in open-floor chaos. His speed, quickness, and fluid body control allow him to split defenders and convert at the rim with advanced balance and footwork, even at full pace. Defensively, Lafell brings quick, active, and reactive hands, consistently producing steals through back taps, stabs, and sheer determination. Lafell impacts winning on both ends, changing the energy of the game with his motor, anticipation, and ability to make momentum shifting plays.
