Expert Analysis
Devin Record | Prep Hoops Scout
Boen is headed to Boise State next year to play defensive back for the football team. In the meantime, Phelps has been absolutely killing it on the basketball court, helping lead Freeman to a 19-2 record. He averages about 24 points a game and leads a roster with a lot of underclassman but is a fantastic leader and knows how to find his spots. He has a very high basketball IQ and that helps quite late in the season.

Phelps and the Freeman Scotties lost two key guys from a year ago, but even with only one other senior on the squad Phelps has managed to lead them to an 11-1 record and a fifth-place ranking in the latest AP poll. He has shouldered a big load, scoring 23.8 points per game and leading a varsity roster with five sophomores and one freshman. He hasn’t scored less than 18 points in any game, and his season high is 30. In other words, Phelps has been a rock for the Scotties so far. He’s a strong kid so don’t expect him to wear down anytime soon as he looks to keep Freeman in contention for the 1A title.

He had 26 and 24 points in a win over Clarkston and Liberty. He didn’t have a whole lot of time in between being a standout QB and DB on the Freeman football team that went deep into the playoffs and getting back to the court. He is nevertheless off to a strong start. He is a tough do-it-all guard who I watched nearly record a triple-double in a regional game vs Toppenish last season. It won’t be a surprise if he does that this season with his all-around skills. He is an athlete on the floor. He is strong and at 6’2, and rebounds at a high level. He can score from all levels and play either guard spot and more. He has been a standout starting guard for all of his years at Freeman on some talented teams. He plays with great speed and quickness and could reach a triple-double in more than one way. He impacts the game in all facets. He is fun to watch with his all-over-the-floor playing style.

The do everything guard is busy with football right now as the QB for a playoff bound Freeman team. Once he hits the hardwood, he’s one of the most complete players at the 1A level.

I’m starting this team with a multi-faceted true competitor. He’s playing quarterback for Freeman right now and does both sports on an all-state level. What I get here is a legitimate threat to post a triple double from the guard position. He’s tough, he can get down on the defensive side of the ball, rebound, and find his shooters with his excellent court vision. He’s a good leader and the start of a common theme for the East.

No. 4 | This is starting to feel like a running theme, but Phelps is another kid who is simply put a grinder. He leads through effort, challenging the opposition on every play. He’s a terrific defender, can run the offense, and also acts as the main scorer at times. His strength at the rim stands out but he’s also got a nice looking stroke when he gets his feet under him.
