Expert Analysis
Andrew Herman | Prep Hoops Scout
Kipnis has two-way ability written all over him with how much he can impact both sides of the ball. His offense is elite when it comes to scoring the basketball and has a quick handle for him to get anywhere he wants to on the court. He finishes in the paint strong over multiple defenders with creative moves around the basket. His three-point shooting is what makes him dangerous as he has unlimited range and can get his shot up in a multitude of ways. On defense, he can pick up anyone full-court and has great timing and reactions when getting into the passing lanes.

Kipnis has turned into an excellent two-way player with his ability to guard the team’s best perimeter player. He moves his feet well when guarding quicker players and has a nose for the ball once he strips it away from a player. Kipnis will disrupt passing lanes and turn those turnovers into easy fastbreak points. At 6’3″ at the shooting guard position Kipnis can block a couple of shots whether that’s on a chase down or on a jump shot.

Kipnis is a player that never stops moving with or without the basketball throughout a game. He will look to come off of off-ball screens for catch-and-shoot three-pointers. His handles allow him to break defenders down to hit step-back shots over taller defenders. Kipnis won’t think twice before shooting it from deep and can shoot well beyond the line. His defense is great as he can wrap around a ball handler and poke it free to start the fastbreak. He can switch onto almost every position and stays strong when someone tries to get past him or back him down.

Kipnis has an insanely fast release allowing him to get the shot off in almost any situation. He is always getting his feet set no matter how crazy the pressure of a defense can get to him. Kipnis can hit the pull-up three in transition with full confidence making it seem easy. He loves his catch-and-shoot shots and can even hit the deep shots well way behind the arc. Kipnis made 86 threes last season.

Kipnis is a straight shooter from the three-point line that rarely misses if you give him open space. He needs very little room, in general, to get off his quick release making it difficult to defend and run out to contest. Not only can Kipnis shoot but he has an all-around game too. He uses his 6’2″ frame to see over the offense to make plays for his teammates, crash the glass, block shots, and strip defenders if you try to size him up. I see no reason why Kipnis won’t skyrocket up the rankings next year.
