Expert Analysis
Chad Graham | Prep Hoops Scout
Ellegood went from being the sophomore wheel man for a veteran title team to the engine for a young squad that had to scrap for every; and he did it eloquently. Ellegood was lightning in a bottle on defense the way he energetically hounded whoever he was guarding and forcing turnovers. Offensively, he devastated teams off-the-dribble, often dashing into the lane then pulling up for two before the help could collapse on him. Ellegood also threatened the defense off-the-catch, curling off of screens for three or, when his man went over, blitzing into the paint for rim attempts.

A lightning-quick floor general, Ellegood is a menace on defense and a walking paint touch on offense. And he shoots the ball spotting up even better than he does off-the-dribble. On top of shouldering the leadership role, I’m interested in seeing him play with better leverage at the point-of-attack against bigger guards.

Ellegood played in spurts and primarily off-ball as a freshman, so he had to grow up quickly in order to make those around him better. His will to get into the paint unlocked the rim-running from Sanford’s forwards and tilted the defense for their shooters. And when others couldn’t make shots, Ellegood supplemented that with pull-up threes of his own. He found his groove going into the tournament and moved the needle just enough for the Warriors to win the chip.

Ellegood is a legit point guard, but his ability to play both on and off the ball is extremely valuable for We-R1 UAA. Playing off of others, he can catch-and-shoot from deep. And when he’s on, Ellegood shows his passing instincts and shows off his step-back jumper.
