Tom Keller | Prep Hoops Scout
Led the way for Penn Hills with his ability to score the ball in a variety of ways and create separation to get his shot off. Finished with 11 points on the night. He was also active defensively, jumping into passing lanes to collect steals. Showed the ability to make plays for others as well, displaying solid vision and awareness of the floor.

Hawthorne went unconscious in the 4th quarter exploding for 30 points in the final eight minuets and put the game back into reach for his Penn Hills team. He waits in the bushes and lulls defenders asleep and then makes an eye popping play when they are tired. He lives in the paint and did a nice job getting by defenders to get to the cup. He spent a fair amount of time at the foul line but left some points on the board there. Hawthorne should see traction at the division two level, junior college level and would be a great addition at the prep school level.

Despite a very slow start Hawthorne had a massive 4th quarter to help surge a comeback. He had 10 of his 13 points in the final quarter. He has always lived in the paint and made several trips to the charity stripe. I would like to see him become a more consistent finisher he left some points on the board. He has always been a player who has applied great pressure on the defensive end.

One of the more productive guards in the area for multiple years, Hawthorne is back to lead one of the WPIAL’s most consistent programs for his senior year. A crafty score-first lead guard, he’s effective in the halfcourt using ball screens to navigate his way to spots off the bounce, consistently turning the corner to finish smoothly at the cup. He also shows the ability to thrive with his speed in the open floor. Young for his grade, Hawthorne could be an intriguing prep candidate but should also draw attention from scholarship-level programs this winter, particularly if he shows greater ability to stretch defenses out to the perimeter.

Hawthorne’s a crafty on-ball guard who plays chess while everyone else is playing checkers. He is an effective set-up man who has a real ability to make plays for others. He scored in a plethora of ways inside of the two point line. Hawthorne is very poised coming off of ball-screens and is constantly moving when the ball is not in his hands. I also was impressed with his frequent ball pressure on the defensive side of the ball and was able to turn defense to offense on more than several occasions. I would like to see Amon be a more confident shooter from behind the arc, he shows some signs of being a tad reluctant from there. He is a prospect who should see recruitment from the division 2 & 3 level.
