Group 1 is filled with talented players who are capable of making big plays against the Garden State’s top competition. Here are the top duo to watch in Group 1.
Burlington City: Jamaal Morris Jamaal Morris 5'10" | PG Trenton Catholic | 2022 NY & Jameel Morris Jameel Morris 6'1" | PG Trenton Catholic | 2023 NY
The Blue Devils are the two-time defending Central Jersey Group 1 champions, but they will have to replace the school’s all-time leading scorer in Temple football commit DJ Woodbury DJ Woodbury 6'2" | CG Burlington City | 2020 State NJ . Jamaal Morris Jamaal Morris 5'10" | PG Trenton Catholic | 2022 NY was named to Second Team All-Group 1 after being the team’s second leading scorer. The 5’10 guard is a good three-point shooter who only needs a few inches of space to get his shot up. Jameel Morris Jameel Morris 6'1" | PG Trenton Catholic | 2023 NY is more of a slasher who knows how to finish around the basket. Burlington City will need both of them to up their scoring for the Blue Devils to win their third straight Central Jersey Group 1 title.
Bound Brook: Quadir Harrell Quadir Harrell 5'10" | PG Bound Brook | 2022 State NJ & Cam’Ron Summers Cam’Ron Summers 6'4" | SG Bound Brook | 2021 State NJ
The Crusaders fell to Burlington City in the Central Jersey Group 1 final and they should be contenders to win it in 2020-21. Harrell is a dynamic point guard who can get hot from behind the arc but also blow by his defender in the half court. Summers is a rugged forward prospect who has a nice touch around the basket and has a solid mid-range game. They play well off each other and have a good chemistry with Davie McLarty Davie McLarty SG Bound Brook | 2021 State NJ . Bound Brook is looking to take home the Central Jersey Group 1 title behind Harrell, Summers and McLarty.
University: Bakir Cleveland Bakir Cleveland 6'4" | SG University | 2021 State NJ & Spencer Joyner Spencer Joyner 6'4" | PG Arts | 2023 State NJ
The Phoenix are loaded with returning talent as Janaie Coates Janaie Coates 6'8" | PF University | 2021 State NJ , Justin Harcourt Justin Harcourt 6'5" | SF University | 2021 State NJ , Elijon Nix Elijon Nix 6'0" | PG Arts | 2023 State NJ and Tye Artis Tye Artis 5'9" | PG University | 2021 State NJ coming back. Cleveland is the team’s top returning scorer and is primed for a big senior season after being named to First Team All-Group 1. The 6’4 guard is a good finisher around the basket and knows how to make shots through contact. Joyner is a talented point guard who can rebound the ball, beat his man off the dribble and defend the ball. University should be one of the teams to beat in Group 1 with Cleveland and Joyner coming back.
Lindenwold: Tazir Cantey Tazir Cantey 6'0" | PG Eastern | 2021 State NJ & Eriq Campbell
The Lions made a run to the South Jersey Group 1 title game with Cantey missing the majority of the playoffs due to injury. The electric guard is a big-time scorer who can blow by his defender, finish around the basket and knock down shots from distance. Campbell picked up the scoring slack as he poured in 80 points in the first three games of the state playoffs. He is a good passer, plays with composure on the ball and can finish through traffic. Cantey and Campbell have the talent to take Lindenwold back to the South Jersey Group 1 final and hopefully they take home the title in 2020-21.
Hasbrouck Heights: Kunga Tsering Kunga Tsering 6'6" | SF Woodstock Academy | 2022 State New E & Steven Faussette
The Aviators were quietly one of the better teams in Group 1 after going 20-8 and appearing in the North Jersey 1 Group 1 semifinals. Tsering was a force all season for Hasbrouck Heights as he had 22 double-doubles. The 6’7 forward has a good feel for the game as he can bring the ball up, finish above the rim and score around the basket. Faussette plays with composure on the ball and is a good on-ball defender. Hasbrouck Heights has high expectations in 2020-21 with the return of Tsering and Faussette.
