Rookies are always the most exciting players on the court. No matter if it is in the NBA or high school, fans love to see what players will do in their first games of their career. For these select freshmen, year one was a complete success. Here is the All-Freshmen team from the 2019-2020 season.
DJ Wagner | Camden: Camden finished the season as the No. 1 team in New Jersey and it was much in part because of their sensational freshman. Wagner led Camden in scoring with 557 points for an average of 18.6 per game. He is a scorer at all three levels just like his father, Dajuan Wagner, was. Wagner hit 71 three’s in his first season and made it a habit of getting to the line. The versatile, athletic point guard will have three more years to turn into one of the best players in the state.
Mackenzie Mgbako Mackenzie Mgbako 6'8" | SF Roselle Catholic | 2023 State #5 Nation NJ | Gill St. Bernard’s: Mgbako is the next great big man, not just at Gill St. Bernard’s, but in the state. He is in a program that breeds big men. The 6’7 forward finished in double-figures in 23 of 27 games in his first season. Mgbako is very agile for his size. He can play many position on both ends of the floor. Mgbako finished with 14 points and 8.3 rebounds per game.
Simeon Wilcher Simeon Wilcher 6'4" | PG Roselle Catholic | 2023 State #17 Nation NJ | Roselle Catholic: Wilcher was thrown into the starting lineup when Richie Greaves Richie Greaves 6'0" | PG Roselle Catholic | 2020 State NJ suffered an injury. The Lions did not miss a beat with the switch. Wilcher was not a huge scorer but he showed off his jump shot at times. This is a freshman who may have the highest ceiling of anyone in the class. Wilcher is a guard with great length, speed, athleticism, and instincts. The sky is the limit for Wilcher, who will land many big time offers over the next three years.
Cian Medley Cian Medley 6'0" | PG Camden | 2023 State NJ | Camden: Camden is set up well for the future with Wagner and Medley in the Class of 2023. Medley was not as dynamic of a scorer as Wagner, but he showed his ability to shoot from deep. He has a quick release from three and is lethal from all over the floor.
Akil Watson Akil Watson 6'7" | SF Roselle Catholic | 2023 State #105 Nation NJ | Don Bosco: Watson had the pleasure of learning from other strong guards like Myles Ruth Myles Ruth 6'1" | PG Don Bosco Prep | 2020 State NJ and Brendan Mykalcio Brendan Mykalcio 6'5" | SF Patrick School National | 2021 State NJ . This will help him next season as he becomes Don Bosco’s top option. Watson has all the tools to turn into a huge prospect.
