This group of NorCal 2021 guards average height is 5’9 to 6’1 some will have a growth spurt, frames will fill out, but make no mistake their contributions, are as important to their teams as any scorer, or post player. When you talk smaller guards, sometimes it’s the size of the heart that can take you to the next level. They have good skills.

[player_tooltip player_id="775763" first="Taj" last="Phillips"] 5’9, Bishop O’Dowd (Oakland CA)

Phillips is the starting point guard at Bishop O’Dowd a team that made it to the NorCal Open Finals. He’s a quality player with a good understanding of how to play. He has good handles and patient on top, he gets the ball to the shooters and scorers who are positioned well to finish. His head is always up to make the long strong pass up court. He handles the trap, and has a decent mid-range jumper. Always plays under control.

[player_tooltip player_id="963966" first="Chris" last="Holley"] 5’11, Jesuit (Carmichael CA)

A guard who can play at a fast pace but under control. His feet are always moving. He has a good first step on the drive, good lift on his mid-range and he hits three’s. He’s light on his feet and stays in front of defenders. He averaged a solid 12.5 ppg.

[player_tooltip player_id="775776" first="Omari" last="Davis"] 6’1, Vanden (Fairfield CA)

A slender guard with good quickness and can shoot from three. He has good form and lift on his mid-range jumper, has the speed and quickness to stay with defenders. He’s a reliable player that needs to get stronger, his best days are in front of him.

[player_tooltip player_id="775778" first="TJ" last="Fox"] 6’0, Center (Antelope CA)

A score first guard who can find his way to the basket, with some craftiness and strength. He gets good elevation on his jumper. He’s athletic and has good stamina. I’ll have to see more of him.

[player_tooltip player_id="775801" first="Agjanti" last="Miller"] 6’3, Vanden (Vallejo CA)

Miller has that shooters confidence, he moves well without the ball and ready to shoot when he gets it. He doesn’t force it, and will pass to a teammate with a better chance to score. He has made noticeable improvement on defense. I’ll Keep an eye on him.

[player_tooltip player_id="947861" first="Chance" last="Carlton"] 5’9, Newark Memorial (Newark CA)

A solid floor leader, he shows patience running half-court sets. His court vision is on display in transition, as he consistently finds players in the right spots. He’s good at drawing fouls to get to the line. He can make shots in close games.

[player_tooltip player_id="947859" first="Cameron" last="Walker"] 5’10, Turlock (Turlock CA)

He plays with controlled tenacity. At this point he’s a combo guard, he creates his shot off the dribble, he has that burst to blow by you and use an array of moves to score, including a consistent mid-range jumper. His handles and willingness to pass makes him a reliable point guard later on. He averaged 13.9 ppg, 3.5 asts.

[player_tooltip player_id="946535" first="Brock" last="Susko"] 6’3 Los Altos (Los Altos CA)

A good all around two sport athlete (baseball) He’s a combo guard with size and handles, has the ability to see over smaller defenders in the open court, and he runs the point effectively. He’s patient at the top and makes good passes to players cutting to the basket, has a nice pull up jumper and he attacks well from the wings and baseline.

[player_tooltip player_id="946901" first="Justice" last="Owens"] 5’9, Pioneer (San Jose CA)

Owens has improved his point guard responsibilities. He’s a good shooter who can get on a hot streak from three. The area of improvement comes at running half-court sets, and having a more consistent mid-range jumper. He has good speed with the ball, his passing skills are underrated, and he has good body control, he somehow avoids body blows on the drive. Putting on some extra weight would help.
