Scouting Report: Signed Seniors

The conclusion of the Ball Dawgs All-Star game also marks the conclusion of the High School careers for many players. It was a tremendous year for the class of 2020, with several players fortunate enough to continue their playing careers at the collegiate level. In this article, PH takes an in-depth analysis of the players that have signed.

[player_tooltip player_id="533016" first="Daishen" last="Nix"] 6’5 PG Trinity International (#1) UCLA

Strengths: Passing, Basketball IQ, Finishing ability

Weakness: 3pt Shooting

Scouting Report: Have to pick your poison. Do you want to let him beat you by himself, or do you want to allow him to get others involved? Difficult guy to gameplan against, because his IQ is so high. Best bet is to use multiple defenders and force him to beat you shooting the 3 against a late close. If he makes them, then it’s a wrap and you’re probably going to lose.

Ceiling: Jason Kidd

[player_tooltip player_id="797129" first="Julian" last="Strawther"] 6’6 SF Liberty (#2) Gonzaga

Strengths: 3Pt Shooting, 1 on 1 ability

Weakness: Perimeter defense,

Scouting Report: Have to make him defend. I would put him in a variety of pick in rolls where he was both on ball and the roll defender. Must stay attached to him at all times. You can’t run him off the line either, you must stay disciplined in your closeout, as he is explosive enough to get by with his first step. If he gets hot you have to run two at him to get the ball out of his hands. Capable of beating you by himself.

Ceiling: Tobias Harris

[player_tooltip player_id="797130" first="Mwani" last="Wilkinson"] 6’6 SF Bishop Gorman (#3) LSU

Strengths: R &J athleticism, Defensive versatility

Weakness: 3pt Shooting

Scouting Report: Not worth challenging defensively, he can impact the game with both his on ball and off ball defensive skills. Take away all easy baskets, no transition layups and no putbacks Make him shoot it but from about 3 feet further out. He loves the 16-18 foot pullup and is consistently accurate from there. Must try to limit his +/- impact on the game.

Ceiling: Jarrett Culver

[player_tooltip player_id="797131" first="Donavan" last="Yap"] 6’3 SG Arbor View (#4) UNLV

Strengths: Distance Shooting, Offensive versatility

Weakness: Perimeter Defense

Scouting Report: Stay attached to him at all times. Has range out past the NBA line. Must face multiple bodies on drives, he does have PG skills but he is going to try to finish more than kick. Must run him off multiple off-ball screens to see if he’s willing to stay defensively engaged.

Ceiling: Jordan Poole

[player_tooltip player_id="925440" first="Noah" last="Taitz"] 6’3 SG Bishop Gorman (#5) Stanford (featured image)

Strengths: Perimeter Shooting, Basketball IQ

Weakness: Tweener?

Scouting Report: Do not leave! Quick-release, and he shoots it with no wasted motion You can not be late to close to him. Willing defender, but not sure if he’s quick enough to guard a 1, or strong enough to guard the 2. Run some different iso’s at him early including putting him in the post to see if you can exploit matchups.

Ceiling: Kirk Hinrich

[player_tooltip player_id="856672" first="Larry" last="Holmes"] 6’2 SG Arbor View (#11) College of Southern Nevada

Strengths: Perimeter Shooting, Defensive versatility

Weakness: Positional size,

Scouting Report: Can impact the game in a lot of ways. Must close to him on catch and shoots, but you can’t run past. Take away his transition buckets, and force him to make the pass on the drive. Very good defender, that you must pick your spots against. Has a natural 2 skill set, but may be undersized for the position.

Ceiling: Josh Selby

[player_tooltip player_id="856663" first="Jaylon" last="Lee"] 6’8 PF Arbor View (#12) College of Southern Nevada

Strengths: Size, Rebounding

Weakness: Off-Hand Low Post finishing

Scouting Report: Keep him off the glass! Must be fundamental in your block-outs against him. Sit on his left shoulder in the post. If he beats us he has to do it going over his right shoulder.

Ceiling: Dejuan Blair

[player_tooltip player_id="856670" first="Nati" last="AsFaw"] 6’5 PF Del Sol (#18) College of Southern Nevada

Strengths: Low post scoring, Footwork

Weakness: P&R defense

Scouting Report: He is a really good player that is just undersized. Can’t let him get a clean catch in the post. Must 3/4 or full front, and make him catch it at least 1 foot further than he would like. He’ll shoot it from 3 but don’t close to him unless he makes a couple, and then it’s a short close.

Ceiling: Undersized version of Ike Diogu

[player_tooltip player_id="925444" first="Amari" last="James"] 6’3 SG Spring Valley (#21) College of Southern Nevada

Strengths: Shooting, Frame

Weakness: Tweener

Scouting Report: Run him off the line. I want him trying to beat me by making half-court plays off the dribble. Perhaps a tweener. Does he have the ball skills to play the 1 or can he create enough for himself to play the 2? Type of player that can be a dangerous 2nd or 3rd option on a really good team.

Ceiling: Gary Harris

James Webster 6’3 SG Spring Valley (#31) College of Southern Nevada

Strengths: Perimeter defense, Transition basketball

Weakness: Left hand, perimeter shooting

Scouting Report: Send him left and force him to beat us with jumpers. If he scores going to his right you’re coming out. Big time perimeter defender, be selective at challenging him in iso situations.

Ceiling: Tony Allen

[player_tooltip player_id="925461" first="Luis" last="Avila"] 6’8 SF SECTA (#47) College of Southern Nevada

Strengths: Stretching the floor, good skill for his size

Weakness: Interior defense

Scouting Report: Close short to him. Prototypical stretch 4 that loves to show the ball and put it on the deck to make a play. Must put him in P&R defensive situations, and direct post-ups. He plays better in a free-flowing game, be physical and aggressive when he is defending.

Ceiling: Brian Scalabrine

Follow PrepHoopsNevada
