The number of future collegiate athletes from West Michigan seems to be growing each year making the decision of choosing the All-OK Conference teams a difficult task. This week I’ll be highlighting roughly the 20 best players from the Ottawa Kent Conferences. Up first are the athletes who earned All-OK Conference Honorable Mention recognition.
Ethan Alderink Ethan Alderink 6'4" | PG Holland Christian | 2020 State MI , Holland Christian, 2020
Ethan was one of the premier guards in the OK Green this season, leading Holland Christian to an 11-9 record. His ability to find his shot in multiple ways and his length on the defensive end made Ethan one of the highly sought after recruits in the 2020 class from West Michigan. Ethan will continue his playing career at Grand Valley State University next year.
Mykel Bingham Mykel Bingham 6'7" | SF Grand Rapids Catholic Central | 2020 State MI , Catholic Central, 2020
Mykel is just one of the many weapons that Catholic Central has in its arsenal. When his motor is going, Mykel’s next-level athleticism and natural playmaking ability make the Cougars one of the hardest teams to match up with. His play on the defensive end and his ability to guard multiple positions gives the Cougars a legitimate shot at the Division II title.
Devon Boyd Devon Boyd 6'0" | CG Grand Rapids Catholic Central | 2020 State MI , Catholic Central, 2020
Devon is the second Cougar on my All-OK Conference Honorable Mention list. Surrounded by multiple scoring threats, Devon has captained the Catholic Central attack with poise throughout the season, leading Catholic Central to an outright OK Blue Championship. He’s one of the premier playmaking point guards in the area and deserves a lot of credit for keeping the Cougar offense humming.
Trinidad Chambliss Trinidad Chambliss 6'2" | PG Forest Hills Northern | 2021 State MI , Forest Hills Northern, 2021
Another premier point guard West Michigan has to offer is Forest Hills Northern’s Trinidad Chambliss Trinidad Chambliss 6'2" | PG Forest Hills Northern | 2021 State MI . Chambliss is one of the area’s ultimate gamers, coming up big for the Huskies in crucial spots this season. His late-game heroics against Northview earlier this year ultimately helped the Huskies capture a share of the OK White crown.
Ryan Corner Ryan Corner 6'10" | PF Allendale | 2020 State MI , Allendale, 2020
Ryan was arguably the areas premier big man this season, as he dominated opposing bigs on a nightly basis. His improved footwork and continued growth of his arsenal of post-moves has made Ryan a top priority for several college programs. His post presence alone makes Allendale a popular dark horse pick to make some noise this postseason.
Jamoni Jones Jamoni Jones 6'1" | PG East Kentwood | 2020 State MI , East Kentwood, 2020
Jamoni is one of the more well-rounded guards West Michigan has to offer. Watching him play several times this season, it’s hard to find many holes in his game. He keeps a steady demeanor, plays efficiently offensively and can lock up any guard he matches up with on defense. His skillset has even gained national attention as he recently received an invite to attend Steph Curry’s premier point guard camp this summer.
Vern Nash Vern Nash 5'10" | PG Muskegon | 2020 State MI , Muskegon, 2020
Vern’s playmaking and ability to score in bunches helped Muskegon capture an outright OK Black title this season. A true two-way guard, Vern’s play on both ends earned himself a scholarship to play at Saginaw Valley State University next season. Playing alongside fellow backcourt mate Jarvis Walker Jarvis Walker 6'2" | PG Muskegon | 2020 State #416 Nation MI , Muskegon will be one of the favorites to make it to the Breslin at the end of March.
Trip Riemersma Trip Riemersma 6'4" | SG Zeeland East | 2021 State MI , Zeeland East, 2021
Trip’s scoring prowess led the Chix to a 13-6 overall record and a second-place finish in the OK Green. Trip is a lanky guard that can score from the perimeter and effectively in the mid-range as well. He currently has a number of college programs’ attention and should be one of the areas premier guards in the area again next year.
Cairo Rhodes Cairo Rhodes 6'1" | SF Grand Rapids Christian | 2020 State MI , Grand Rapids Christian, 2020
Cairo helped lead Grand Rapids Christian to a 17-2 record and second-place finish in the OK Gold. The Eagles point guard may be the most athletic point man in the area, as he’s shown the ability to soar above the rim on numerous occasions. The senior guard gets the most out of his minutes as his motor is always turned up.
Eli Steffen Eli Steffen 6'3" | PG Zeeland West | 2020 State MI , Zeeland West, 2020
Eli led the Dux to a 13-7 record in a crowded OK Green. The Cornerstone University commit has a pure stroke from beyond the arch, requiring a close guard anytime he gets past half court. Microwave scorers like Steffen can take a team far come tournament time. Be sure to keep an eye on the Dux this postseason.
Zac Velthouse Zac Velthouse 6'5" | PF Hudsonville Unity Christian | 2021 State MI , Unity Christian, 2021
The fourth player from the OK Green on my honorable mention list is the tenured guard from Unity Christian. A season ago, Velthouse played a key role in the Crusaders State Title run. This season he took on a heavier load, which worked out well for Unity as they captured yet another OK Green title.
Tyler Zomerlei, Hopkins, 2020
The talented swingman helped Hopkins achieve its first OK Silver title in 23 years. Zomerlie has the ability to score both inside the paint and from the midrange extended. When Zomerlei and teammate Drew Weber Drew Weber 6'4" | PG Hopkins | 2020 State MI are in rhythm, the Vikings can hang with anyone in the area.
