Evansville Bosse @ Sullivan: 5 Takeaways

In Saturday afternoon’s contest between the Sullivan Golden Arrows and the Evansville Bosse Bulldogs, shooting was on display early. Both teams were above 50% from the floor in the first half to keep the game close. To end the first half and start the second half, Bosse went on a 16-2 run, highlighted by a couple of monster alley-oop slams, to stretch to extend the lead out to 16 midway through the third quarter. From that point on, Bosse cruised to a 74-61 victory on the road. Although Bosse won by 13 points, they controlled the game so much more than that. Rocco Roshel hit six threes down the stretch to keep the game reasonably close. Now, let’s take a look at five key takeaways from Saturday afternoon’s game…

1. If Bosse can hit shots, they will give Heritage Hills a game

Sectional 32 is going to be tough with both Heritage Hills and Evansville Bosse ranked in the top 8 in 3A. Heritage Hills beat Bosse by 14 on a neutral court at the beginning of the season, so they are the favorite coming into the Sectional. However, Bosse was able to use their shooting ability to beat Sullivan by shooting 60%. Should the Bulldogs be able to shoot like that in the Sectional, Bosse could very easily take home a Sectional championship this year.

2. Sullivan and Washington will duke it out for Sectional 31

Sullivan shot lights out in the first half, but they struggled in the second half. However, their shooting ability will allow them to dominate in the Sectional tournament. Sullivan was a whopping 39% from downtown including a 6-8 performance by sophomore, Rocco Roshel. If the Golden Arrows can shoot like this in a couple of weeks, they will be Sectional champions for the first time in nearly 10 years.

3. Rocco Roshel is going to be a heck of a player

Rocco Roshel did not do much in the first half as he only took one shot from the field and missed it. However, in the second half, Roshel was an outstanding 6-7 from deep. He kept catching and shooting, and he knocked down three after three. If Roshel shoots like this in the future, he is going to be a heck of a player in the future.

4. Ty’Ran Funches is the best player on this Bosse team

Ty’Ran Funches has incredibly quick hands during on-ball defense, and he can slice through the lane to get to the hole with ease. Funches shot lights out from the field at 10-12, and he ended with 24 points. He was able to get to the rim and finish through contact. If Funches can continue to play at this level, he is going to be the key to success. The dynamic duo of Ty’Ran Funches and Kiyron Powell may have what it takes to bring down Heritage Hills if they play as they did on Saturday.

5. Kiyron Powell is the best dunker in the state

During the Bulldogs 16-2 run, Powell threw down 2 monster alley-oop jams that brought the Bosse side to its feet. Then, halfway through the fourth quarter, Powell brought the entire gymnasium to its feet when he caught a pass on the fast break, took one dribble from the free-throw line, and threw it with power off the back of the rim. This dunk would have been the best dunk that I had seen at the high school level, and it is a dunk that he has done numerous times this season. Powell finished the game with 13 points, 11 rebounds, and 7 blocks, but his biggest impact was the monster slams.
