Union City basketball does not have many bright spots in the 2020 season standing at 13-9. The one bright spot the Soaring Eagles have rode all year has been sophomore guard Maurice Armstrong. Throughout the 2019-2020 season the young guard has been nothing short of sensational. Odum is averaging 27 points per game (2nd leading scorer in New Jersey) with seven 30+ games this season. Although Randolph has a great home crowd, the play of Armstrong and the way he takes over the game Union City looks to have a great chance to steal one on the road.
William Richardson: Bergen Catholic Point Guard
Friday Mar 6, 2020, 7:00pm @ Bergen Catholic
Point guard William Richardson has been one of the quickest point guards in New Jersey. As only a sophomore the young guard has taken on a leadership role, while averaging 18 points per game for the Crusaders. Richardson really showcased his scoring ability in a home game against St. Raymonds where he erupted for 31 points and 7 assists leading his team to a grind-it-out comeback win at home. With Richardson playing at a high level and running mate Julian Brown bringing it every night with his contagious intensity and passion, this Bergen Catholic team looks to be the clear favorite going into North Jersey,Non Public A section.
DJ Wagner Jr. : Camden Point Guard
Tue, Mar 3, 2020,7:00pm @ Woodrow Wilson
From the second DaJuan Wagner Jr. stepped onto the court, one could observe the composure and confidence he has when playing. As just a freshman Wagner has already proven that he is one of the best players in the state of New Jersey. DJ is under great guidance as he is accompanied by Division 1 talent all over the court while still carrying the majority of the offensive load. From the fancy crossovers, to athletic finishes, the freshmen guard is a handful for defenders and can score on every level. According to ESPN the Panthers are ranked 17th in the nation, and with the play of Wagner and the rest of his Panthers squad, South Jersey Group 2 looks to be a lock for this experienced team.
Julian Brown: Bergen Catholic Shooting Guard
Tue, Mar 3, 2020,7:00pm @ Woodrow Wilson
Sophomore guard Julian Brown has been the unsung hero for this thriving Bergen Catholic squad. While playing next to the greatness of William Richardson and Matt Zona, Brown has made a name for himself as one of the key components to his teams success. Although we know Brown can score the ball with the best of them (17.7 points per game) its his fierce competitiveness and drive that makes him stand out the most. Brown is always the first one to the floor for loose balls, first one to his teammates defense, and a very reliable option from deep. Look for the Crusaders to ride Brown’s energy and use it to come to a North Jersey, Non-Public A championship.
Simeon Wilcher: Roselle Catholic Point guard
Tue, Mar 3, 2020, 7:00pm @Roselle Catholic
Roselle Catholic has been having one of their greatest seasons so far. With the talents of Cliff Omoruyi, Niels Lane, Corey Floyd Jr, and CJ Wilcher the Lions look like a favorite coming into the playoffs. The one piece that seems to keep the team together is freshman Simeon Wilcher. Throughout the season the young guard has been able to play next to Seniors Ahmad Robinson and Richie Greeves. As injuries plagued this Lions squad, Wilcher has been able to insert himself as one of the featured guys on this team. Wilcher is able to use his length to get into passing lanes, get his teammates involved, and do things that don’t show up on the boxscore. With Roselle Catholic and The Patrick School being on the same side of the North Jersey, Section 1, Group 4 bracket, look for Wilcher to be the X factor that can help the Lions settle the heated rivalry between the two sides.
