Vashon vs Mehlville: Top Five Stars

<p>Prep Hoops Missouri was at Vashon High on Tuesday night for a big non-conference showdown between state contenders Mehlville and the host Wolverines. Vashon is ranked No. 1 in the Class 4 rankings while Mehlville is ranked No. x in the Class 5 rankings.</p> <p>The host Wolverines dominated the game from the outset as they built a 15-point lead behind some torrid 3-point shooting. Mehlville was able to battle back and cut the lead to two points with a chance to tie late in the game. Vashon was able to get a couple of late stops to pull out a 70-63 victory.</p> <p>Here is a look at the top five stars from Tuesday night’s Vashon-Mehlville game.</p> <h3>No. 1 Star: Cameron Fletcher (Vashon)</h3> <p>The 6'7" University of Kentucky signee had a tremendous performance as scored a game-high 24 points and added two steals, two block and three dunks. He was spectacular in the first quarter as he scored 17 points and knocked down five 3-pointers to stake the Wolverines to a 24-13 advantage. His combination of explosive athleticism and his smooth shooting stroke was on full display throughout the evening.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <h3>No. 2 Star: Nick Kern (Vashon)</h3> <p>The 6'5" 2021 guard had a big game at both ends of the floor with 18 points, three rebounds, four steals and three blocks. On the offensive end, he was good as he set up at the mid-post area and attacked the basket on the bounce and hit mid-range jumpers. He turned in the play of the night as he drove from the left wing and threw down a spectacular one-handed dunk over the defense of Mehlville 7-footer <a href="https://prephoops.com/player/davion-bradford/"><a href="https://prephoops.com/player/davion-bradford/">Davion Bradford</a></a>. His length was a big factor on the defensive end with the steal and blocked shots.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <h3>No. 3 Star: King Waller (Mehlville)</h3> <p>The 6'2" 2020 guard had 23 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals. He had a big first half with 14 points as he did his best to keep the Panthers competitive during Vashon's 3-point onslaught in the first half. He used his big physical body to attack the rim off the dribble and he did an excellent job of finishing. He was also very good in the transition game and he can knock down the Corner 3-pointer.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <h3>No. 4 Star: <a href="https://prephoops.com/player/phillip-russell/"><a href="https://prephoops.com/player/phillip-russell/">Phillip Russell</a></a> (Vashon)</h3> <p>The 6'0" 2020 SEMO signee scored 15 points with three rebounds, six assists and two steals. Russell displayed his chops as one of the top 3-point shooters in the state with four 3-pointers, including a couple from the volleyball line. He displayed good control of the offense with his handles and he also took a couple of charges in the lane on the defensive end.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <h3>No. 5 Star: <a href="https://prephoops.com/player/lamontay-daugherty/">Lamontay Daughtery</a> (Mehlville)</h3> <p>The 6'7" 2020 forward registered a double-double with 13 points and 15 rebounds to go along with a couple of blocked shots. He was a big factor in the Panthers' big fourth-quarter rally as he started to get busy in the lane and on the offensive glass. The Panthers have excellent overall talent, but they are at their best when he is playing at his best because of his combination of size and versatility.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>
