Prospects: Bainbridge at Roosevelt

The Spartans of Bainbridge High School ferried across Puget Sound for an elimination game against the Roosevelt Rough Riders in the Metro League District Qualifier. The game featured two teams with great ball movement and teamwork. Roosevelt would win the game by a final score of 63 to 51. As has been the case all year, the Riders had balanced scoring from the foursome of Jake Downing, Alex Pape, Danilo Petrovic, and Connor Mirick. Bainbridge's star junior, Andrew Ward, carried his team with 26 points, but it wasn't enough to outlast the Riders. Following the loss, Bainbridge has been eliminated from the district qualifier. Roosevelt lost a recent matchup with Nathan Hale and will play tonight (February 13th) for the final play-in spot.

Danilo Petrovic | 6'3" G | RHS 2022

Danilo Petrovic is the second leading scorer for the Riders this season, and as a sophomore, he has already shown glimpses of the potential greatness ahead. Petrovic had his best game of the season against West Seattle earlier this season, recording 13 points, 17 rebounds, and 6 blocks. He's averaging 10.6 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. How has he been so dominant on the glass and with shot-blocking at only 6'3"? He's strong, smart, and physical. Danilo knows how to use his body to establish space, and he isn't afraid to push the limits of physicality with his opponents. He's only a sophomore, and it looks like his basketball IQ is the strongest part of his game at this point. It will be exciting to see what he can accomplish as his athleticism continues to develop in the coming seasons.

Connor Mirick | 6'5" G | RHS 2020

Mirick has been leading his team in scoring this season, averaging 12.5 points per game, and the senior has shown great decision making as evidenced by an impressive 2.4 assist to turnover ratio. Mirick didn't have his best shooting night in the matchup, but he still displayed his ability to move without the ball and put himself in positions for open looks. He also had a huge and-1 finish off of an assist from Alex Pape in the third quarter amid a run for the Riders.

Andrew Ward | 6'0" G | BHS 2021

Ward has been his team's leading scorer consistently this season, and he has done so by virtue of his impressive shooting. In this game, Andrew had four 3-pointers, shooting about 50% beyond the arc. I was also impressed with both his mid-range shooting and ability to finish with floaters in the lane. He scored a game-high 26 points against Roosevelt, he found the bottom of the net from just about every spot on the court, and despite being his team's best option, he was patient on offense and didn't force any shots along the way.

Alex Pape | 6'2" G | RHS 2021

Among the top passers in the metro league, Alex Pape has shown an impressive ability to provide both consistent scoring and assists for his team. Pape scored 19 points against a tough Ingraham team earlier this season, but what's more impressive is his ability to provide assists when the shots aren't falling. Alex has had four games this season where he has had more assists than points, and he has had only two games where he had fewer than 10 points and fewer than 5 assists in the same contest. Pape would finish this game with 13 points, 4 assists, and 3 steals, and 12 of his points came in the first quarter. His steal totals this season show his value on the defensive end of the court. He has good activity on-ball and great instincts for jumping into passing lanes. He's definitely a kid who is going to give you his best effort every minute that he's on the court. *Featured Image (left)

Alan Ulin | 6'2" F | BHS 2021

Bainbridge High School's center, Alan Ulin, only scored three points in this game, but he still had a standout performance on both ends of the court. He grabbed six rebounds in the contest and played tough defense all night, but I was most impressed with his passing ability. Ulin showed great awareness of the Riders' defense by consistently making quick passes to his teammates, and he could find them behind the arc or in the interior for open looks.

Jake Downing | 6'4" W | RHS 2021

Shooting 40% behind the arc, Downing has had two games this season with six made 3-pointers. He went 6 of 10 against Irvington, and 6 of 9 against Cleveland en route to a 28 point game - the highest single-game output for Roosevelt this year. Downing had a tough time in the first half, but he found his range in the second half of the game, scoring 16 points with three huge 3-pointers that helped to put separation between Roosevelt and Bainbridge. *Featured Image (right)

Julian Swanson | 6'4" C | RHS 2021

I have to give a shout-out to Julian Swanson for his performance in this game. Julian is the prototype for what I'm going to call the dollar menu players - he's going to give you one of everything. In this game, he had 4 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, and 1 block, but his impact wasn't the type that comes through on a stat line. He played outstanding defense all night long, sliding his feet, keeping his arms wide, and putting his body in front of opponents even if that meant taking a full-speed shoulder to the chest. Every team needs an athlete that does the things that Swanson does.
