How The “Week” Was Won: Christmas to New Year’s Eve Edition

How The “Week” Was Won: Christmas to New Year’s Eve Edition

Wing Play

I've been dazzled by the level of guard play around the Atlanta area, but this week I had the pleasure of seeing some true wings in action, some of them true 2-guards, some of them small forwards, all with the ability to light up the scoreboard from a multitude of spots on the floor. Here are a half dozen I saw for the first time this past week that really made an impression

Andrew Thomas (Smyrna) - At a long 6-7 with all kinds of smoothness moving with or without the ball, he's a matchup nightmare with a sweet mid-range jumper and all the confidence of a player who looks like he can score on anyone. (Signed with Mercer)

Scoot Henderson (Kell) - He may only be 6-1, but his physicality for a sophomore really jumped out at me. He can shoot, drive it, and bull his way over you, and is D-1 ready right now in my eyes. (Getting hard looks from everyone that matters in the college game)

Brandon Stroud (East Coweta) - Twice this week Stroud shined with my pad in my hands, and it was a treat to watch the long and lean 6-5 wing do it all, burying long-range jumpers, taking guys off the dribble and elite finishing around the rim. (Signed with Kennesaw St)

Zocko Littleton (South Cobb) - Perhaps more of a combo guard than a true wing, he still has a home out there with his shooting ability, but his athleticism on the break and crafty approach to getting to the basket are highlights for the 6-2 junior. (Receiving 'warm' interest from Georgia St among others)

Jermaine Lattimore (North Clayton) - As I mentioned in my Big South Shootout roundup, Lattimore can simply light it up, and reminds of Steph Curry with his willingness to pull the trigger from anywhere. He was simply fantastic against Parkview netting 33 points.

Michael Fitzgerald (Roswell) - The 6-4 junior is getting much more attention for his dual threat QB-ing talent for the state power Hornets, but I couldn't miss his work on the hardwood this past week against a relentlessly athletic frontcourt for Langston Hughes. He was quick, fluid, and heady, and was automatic inside 5 feet.

THE WEEK AHEAD

Prep Hoops Georgia has mapped out some fun matchups as we enter 2020, and region play will be heating up. We'll get our first look at 12-1 Walnut Grove for Friday Night Floater, as they host a solid Buford club in a crucial 5A Region 8 game. Then for Saturday Splash, we head off to Pope in 6A Region 7 for a second look at both the Greyhounds, who behind Will Kolker look healthy and full-throttled after some injuries and sickness, and visiting region foe North Atlanta, who topped a strong Chattahoochee team last time I saw them without center Montavious Myrick. We'll polish it off before the next "How The Week Was Won" with a Tuesday Transition at Marist, who hasn't lost at home yet this season and will in a massive 4A Region 7 clash host Denmark, a team that really impressed me over Thanksgiving and I'm intrigued to see again with their bevy of size and steady guard play.
