Indiana is full of great teams and talented players thus giving the fans incredible matchups every week. Join me, Kyler Staley, every Monday during the season as I preview the 3 Players, 3 Teams, and 3 Matchups to watch for that coming week. Are you ready? Let’s get started!
3 Players
Charlie Yoder – 6’4 2020 SF – Westview: Yoder is coming off a huge weekend with dropping 32 points in Saturday’s win against University. This player is one of the top 2020 prospects that has yet to sign with a college. This kid can really light it up when given the opportunity. Watch out for Yoder to potentially drop another 30-point game as him and Westview take on a Lakeland on Saturday.
Colson Montgomery – 6’5 2021 SG – Southridge: Montgomery is on fire right now having just dropped his career high in points with 41 versus Shoals. This dude is one of the best athletes in the state. He gets most of his points with his excellent jumper but is also smooth through traffic. If you are in the North Daviess area, take some time to go watch him play Blackford in the Old National Bank Tournament tonight.
Will Lovings-Watts – 6’5 2022 SF – Jeffersonville: The Red Devils are kind of on an up and down year at the moment but has some great players, Lovings-Watts being one of them. He is arguably one of the top 2022 prospects we have seen this year. Very physical wing that mixes in a lot of post play in his game. Jeff plays Valpo on Friday in the Kokomo Tournament and I think this will be a great event for Lovings-Watts to show out.
3 Teams
Columbus North (4A): The Bulldogs are one of the best teams in 4A right now with a 6-1 record. Their stud duo, Nicholas Schiavell and Blake Barker, have been playing as great as we thought they would. This is a big week for North as they compete in the Noblesville Tournament, which is stacked. In the first round matchup they take on New Albany. If they can get past the first round, do not be shocked to see this excellent team go far in the tourney.
Fort Wayne Snider (4A): Snider is another team that is on fire at the moment. They have won three straight and their victories have not even been close. They play in the Summit Conference Tournament this weekend and they should be the favorites to win the whole thing. This team is loaded with talent like Dillon Duff, Isaac Farnsworth, Michael Eley, and others. Expect them to have a winning holiday weekend.
University (2A): The Trailblazers are coming off two straight losses right now. They have a pretty challenging Christmas week as they play Seton Catholic tonight and play in the Bedford Tournament this weekend. They probably will not be the biggest team in the tourney but will for sure be one of the best. Expect players like Lawrence Pierce, Max Greenamoyer, Joseph Martin, and others to have a rewarding week.
3 Matchups
Bloomington North (4A) vs Fishers (4A) – Dec. 27, 6 pm: This is arguably the best first round game of the Bedford Tournament this weekend. Both teams are on a roll and both will be looking to win the entire event. Both are undefeated as well and both have great prospects like Fishers center Isaac Farah and junior SG Isaac Vencel. I expect this to be a back-and-forth contest and the winner just barley sneaking by.
Morristown (1A) vs Southwestern (Hanover) (2A) – Dec. 27, 6 pm: This is going to be a contest between two fairly even teams. Hanover (5-4) will be looking to snap a 3-game losing streak when they face a Morristown team (3-2) that is coming off a tough OT loss to South Decatur. Morristown’s stud junior PG Kyle Crim will have a fun matchup with Hanover’s junior PG Foster Mefford. Just from the eye test, I give the slight edge to Hanover in this game but could easily be wrong.
Silver Creek (3A) at Heritage Hills (3A) – Dec. 28, 10 am: This is probably the biggest game of the week. These are the top two teams in 3A by far. Silver Creek’s Kooper Jacobi and Trey Kaufman have been dominant and Heritage Hills’ Blake Sisley is simply one of the best 2020 bigs in the state. The 1v1 matchups are going to be extremely fun to watch. Whoever comes out the victor in this game has a very good chance to win the entire Hall of Fame Tournament.
