Last night I went to St. John's to see them face Archbishop Carroll in a WCAC regular season matchup. St. John's has quite a few new faces on this year's team but it was one of their returning seniors that really showed out last night in a 56-40 win over Carroll. Below are three takeaways I have from the contest.

John "Mikey" Square Shows Improvement

John “Mikey” Square has made a huge leap since last year. Last night he was fantastic for the Cadets finishing with 14 points and 8 rebounds. 12 of those 14 points came from three point land as he showed off a much improved jumper. He has grown into a more natural leader and realizes he is a returning senior on a team trying to win a conference championship. He was completely engaged in all phases of the game and was the MVP for SJC last night.

Amani Hansberry Locks Down Tegra Izay

Remember the name Amani Hansberry who is an elite 2023 prospect. The 6’7 freshman completely locked down 6’11 Tegra Izay which hurt Carroll a lot. He is extremely vocal on defense and is constantly talking and calling out everything. Offensively he runs the floor well and will continue to get better on that end but last night it was his defense that really stood out especially for how young he is.

Casheus Covington Impresses

2020 Casheus Covington had a nice performance last night doing everything he could to help Carroll try and come out with a win. He moved well with the ball in his hands by scoring some tough runners off the glass and dished out some assists to his teammates. Carroll had trouble scoring the ball throughout the game but it was Covington who was constantly involved on offense.
