Prospect Upshot: Cornerstone Christian vs Jack Yates

RCS Sports presents the Hoopsgiving Classic 2019 that was held at Houston Christian High School. This is an annual event that takes place the day before thanksgiving. This game was between Jack Yates High School (Houston, TX) and Cornerstone Christian Academy (San Antonio, TX). We were there to cover this game and here is the synopsis, prospect report, and video recap of the game. Yates came out firing on all cylinders as they scored 12 straight points without missing a bucket out of there full-court trapping assault that they laid on Cornerstone. That was the biggest lead that the Lions would have throughout the entire game with 3:51 left to play in the first quarter. The rest of the game was all in favor of Cornerstone Christian Academy. They made the necessary adjustments and broke the press as if it were like stealing candy from a baby and begin to dunk the ball and make transition trey balls. They also shot the ball pretty well as a team as they went for 63.9% from the floor and 57.1% from behind the arc as they attempted 21 trey balls. He is very active on the defensive side of the ball as well. Quick hands great lateral movements to keep opponent in front and to jump the passing lanes. He was also able to create for his teammates as well as creating for himself. He has a lot of JuCo's that are hot on his trail right now. Finished the game with 27 points, 6 assists, and 4 steals. He shot 8/20 from the field, 6/10 from behind the arc, and 5/5 from the foul line.   Rubin Jones 6'4 PG / Jack Yates / Sr. [North Texas] <a href="https://prephoops.com/texas/rankings/2020-rankings/">PHTX150</a> Rubin is a North Texas commit. He played solid on both sides of the ball. He made a lot of tough passes that his teammates weren't ready for at times. Finished the game with 24 points, 2 blocks, and 1 steal. He shot 8/21 from the floor and went 8/18 from deep.   Tre White 6'5 SF / Cornerstone Christian / So. [Kansas] Tre is a top 50 prospect nationally according to all sites. He is a top 3 player for his class in the state of Texas as well and will be in the updated rankings when they are released. He moved out of state last season and now has returned and with a purpose. He was very smooth in his game and ran the show for the most part of the game as a point forward. He is uber-bouncy with great athleticism. Long wingspan and a knack for scoring the ball at a high rate. He is active on the glass as well and has a big-time motor. He is currently committed to Kansas University. He finished with 27 points, 9 rebounds, 4 steals, and 3 assists. He shot 11/12 from the floor, 2/2 from behind the arc, and went 3/3 from the charity stripe.   Jerrell Colbert 6'10 C / Cornerstone Christian / Jr. <a href="https://prephoops.com/texas/rankings/2021-rankings/">PHTX75</a> Jerrell is an athletic big that is uber-bouncy and athletic. He looks to expand his game beyond the 15-foot range. He runs the floor like a deer and is always in the right lane on the transition of the offense. His bounce and long arms gives him an edge for rebounding the ball. What has impressed me the most is the strength that he has developed from the summer to right now. He can be utilized as a five or a four-man on the next level and currently holds 13 NCAA D1 offers at this moment. He finished with 20 points, 12 rebounds, and 2 blocks. He shot 8/13 from the floor, 0/1 from deep, and shot 4/5 from the foul line.   Austin Nunez 6'1 PG / Cornerstone Christian / So. <a href="https://prephoops.com/texas/rankings/2022-rankings/">PHTX25</a> Austin is a big-time deep ball shooter that can run a team from the one position. In the current way that PG's are utilized in today's game as a scorer or a deep ball threat he fits the model. He was able to light it up from downtown. Git some paint touches as well and dished it to the open man. He has the quickness to guard the ball but doesn't have the long-wingspan or the defensive toughness to be a threat defensively yet. He currently holds 7 NCAA D1 offers on the table. He finished with 16 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 steals. He shot 5/13 from the field overall, 5/9 from beyond the arc, and went 1/3 from the charity stripe.   Christian Green 6'6 SF / Cornerstone Christian / Jr. Green is a solid swingman that plays fast. He got out in transition really quickly and also got the ball moving in transition. Was able to guard the smaller guards but played the four spot a lot offensively but showed that he can thrive on the wing. He also has a high IQ offensively in the half-court set and you can tell he is used to being a role player and is very comfortable playing his role. Has to learn how to handle pressure in fast-paced games. Currently, he doesn't have any offers but playing with this group will change that for him. Finished the game with 11 points, 9 assists, 5 rebounds, and 2 steals. He shot 5/7 from the floor and went 1/1 from deep.   Jordan Wood 6'8 PF / Cornerstone Christian / Sr. <a href="https://prephoops.com/texas/rankings/2020-rankings/">PHTX150</a> Wood is solid on the floor. Plays like he's been here before and is a good glue guy. Can stretch out a defense because he has a perimeter game. He has a lanky body build with a big-time wingspan. Fundamentally sound as well as he set solid screens, boxed out on all rebounding situations, and held his opponent in check defensively without reaching or overplaying his man. He currently holds 3 NCAA D1 offers on the table. He finished with 10 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 blocks.
