Heritage Hall, led by four-star shooting guard Trey Alexander, knocked off a very good Millwood squad in their home opener. It was a very competitive game that went back and forth up until the very end. Both teams went on crucial runs late and the Chargers made their run last.
Trey Alexander poured in 30 points for Heritage Hall along with six assists and seven rebounds, nearly pulling off the triple double. They most impressive part of his nihht was the way he dominated the second half, particularly the fourth quarter. 11 of his 30 total points came in the fourth quarter alone as he was nearly unstoppable. He got help from point guard Jack Spanier and also Sebastian Perry who had nine of his own. The defining moment for this Heritage Hall team was when they decided to switch from a half court defense to a full court press which featured a box like formation. Millwood never quite figured this out which sparked a big fourth quarter for the Chargers.
Millwood did all they could do defensively as they played Trey Alexander tight all game and just came up short near the end. Trey got the Falcons in foul trouble and hit free throws down the stretch. 30 in the box score for Alexander doesn’t show how hard the Falcons fought on defense as Heritage Hall really had to work for everything. Isaiah Williams led the Falcons tonight in this star studded matchup with 24 as he hit big shot after big shot. His game is so smooth and he was able to finish around the rim as well tonight. Williams could’ve gone for 30 too if it wasn’t for uncharacteristic free throws misses early on. Myles Jeffries also came up big for the Falcons adding 15 points of his own as he and Williams carried this Millwood offense. Jeffries took care of the ball and knocked down open shots in what was a great game for these two players. Millwood had a huge third quarter with 19 points and the lead heading into the fourth.
Jeffries hit a huge three at the buzzer to end the third quarter and that’s when Trey Alexander took over. Millwood had their lead up to six before Isaiah Williams picked up his fourth foul and the game was never the same after that. Alexander hit a step back three and eventually led a 6-0 run that pushed Heritage ahead 55-49 with 4:08 left to play and the Falcons never regained that early quarter lead. Eventually, Sebastian Perry hit the dagger three for the Chargers in the corner to make it a 9 point game with only one minute left.
Talent was on full display tonight as there were gamers all over the court. Plenty of shooting, athleticism, and fast pace defined this game. Both of these teams have a very bright season ahead of them.
