Contenders, Prospects, & Sleepers: 6A Region III District 17

<p>It is October and that means its only days away from season opening games. Let’s take a dive into the various districts, and begin previewing teams and players to watch! Today we dive into the 6A-III District 17!</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Pre-Season Player of the Year:</strong></span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">This years MVP race will be between these three prospects.</span><span style="color: #ff6600;"><strong> Davion Coleman</strong></span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> looks to capitalize on last year's success as he averaged 20.2 points per game. Davion can score at all 3 levels. He plays hard nose defense. He is a great team leader with a high IQ. <span style="color: #ff6600;"><strong>Damian “DJ” Richards</strong></span> is a shooter and when he’s hot good luck stopping him. He was the sixth best scorer in the district last season as a sophomore averaging 13.3 points per game  and knocked down the district high of 82 trey balls made on the season. Finally we come to <span style="color: #ff6600;"><strong>Garry Grace</strong></span> who was fifth in district with a scoring average of 14.6 points per game. Grace has tremendous ball speed and a nice pull-up when going down hill. </span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;"> </span></p> <p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Team to Beat:</strong></span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Cypress Creek Cougars are loaded when it comes to their starting five. The Cougars went 12-4 in district play last season and finished second place overall. There regular season record was 19-15 overall and they fell in the first round of the playoffs. They will receive good contribution from these prospects. The two seniors in <span style="color: #ff6600;"><strong>Nate Martin</strong></span> a Texas State University commit who missed half of the season last year but averaged 10 ppg and 8 rpg, <span style="color: #ff6600;"><strong>Ed Trahan</strong></span> will be a force in short corner situations and in the high post he averaged 9 ppg and 8 rpg as well. The three juniors <span style="color: #ff6600;"><strong>DJ Richardson</strong></span> a sharp-shooting scorer, <span style="color: #ff6600;"><strong>Marvin Robinson</strong></span> a combo guard with a nice offensive IQ, and <span style="color: #ff6600;"><strong>Chas Kelley</strong></span> who has grown 3-4 inches over the summer and is a skilled 6’3 point guard who will make a lot of noise this year. </span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;"> </span></p> <p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Biggest Threat:</strong></span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Cypress Ridge Rams will be a threat in the district. They have two really solid Senior guards in </span><span style="color: #ff6600;"><strong>Garry Grace</strong></span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> and </span><span style="color: #ff6600;"><strong>Jestin Porter</strong></span><span style="font-weight: 400;">. They were the top two scorers from the team last season. Porter averaged 18 points per game with 2 steals per game, and Grace averaged 14 points per game, 3 steals per game, and 4 assists per game. Expect for this duo to compete at a high level every game night this season. Last year they went 10-6 in district play clinching the final spot for a playoff berth and 17-16 overall where they fell in the first round of the playoffs.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;"> </span></p> <p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Sleeper:</strong></span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Houston Memorial Mustangs bring back a lot of experience and will be senior heavy, they have 5 seniors who have been playing solid minuets since their sophomore season on varsity. Look out for them to beat a lot of teams people wouldn’t expect them to beat.
