Fort Wayne Five: GRBA Standouts

Fort Wayne Five: GRBA Standouts

To wrap up the Fort Wayne GRBA National Championships I’ll avoid a traditional top ten. Instead here a five standouts in no particular order.

James Felton 6-8 2020 Lansing Christian Two straight weekends, two championships for the Michigan Mustangs. At the center of it all is this intriguing young big man. Pretty much has the full package as a post prospect. Perhaps the biggest question as a Class D player is his performance against high level competition. Checked off those boxes in a big way the last two weekends. Not a refined perimeter player but has the size to nullify that concern. Perimeter potential is there as he shows good touch and foot speed. Featured that with a step back three in the corner during a Saturday afternoon victory. Second straight weekend he displayed that move. But make no mistake this is a post player. Good wingspan and a frame that looks like it could handle more weight easily. Trajectory is definitely on a huge upswing.

Maurice Anderson 6-1 2020 Ypsilanti Arbor Prep Playing with 16’s this summer on the Michigan Warriors. But don’t let that fool you, has the type of athleticism at the two guard position that translates to any level. Definition of a power guard. Goes to hole with no fear and elevates over defenders. Standout game was Saturday night. Showed composure in pulling out a hotly contested overtime elimination game against Indy Heat. Will be interesting to follow his production in his senior year with fellow backcourt partner Jordan Young, who looked good with Judge's Court this weekend as well.

Trevon Gunter 6-2 2020 Kalamazoo Central The scheduling stars have not aligned well this summer for me to see this prospect. Finally got to catch him with Camp Darryl this weekend were they lost a heartbreaker to Indy Ice. I was very impressed the first time I saw him at the Redhawk Showcase against Kobe Bufkin and Grand Rapids Christian in the regular season. Seems to have gotten bigger and stronger since then while maintaining his soft outside touch. Also showed improved ball handling. Accelerates well and shows the ability to stop on a dime and elevate quickly on his shot. Will take over a leadership role on what should be one the top Class A teams on the west side.

Omar Ziegler 6-4 2021 Detroit King A unusual commodity in 21st century basketball. A real life...forward. To top it off a forward that operates in a long forgotten area of the court, the mid range. Playing up an age level with the Playmakers but you could not tell at all. Not an overwhelming athlete but does have advanced physical tools. Displayed a balanced, under control, and efficient offensive game. King loses a lot from last year’s team. It will be exciting to watch his development as he becomes one of the focal points of a major high school program.

Bennie Crenshaw 5-11 2021 Waterford Kettering Super aggressive point guard prospect who only knows one speed and that is really fast. Fearless in going to the basket. Once there uses the rim well to shield off defenders. Good ball handler who looks for his teammates. Showing the ability to "settle" and make the routine plays will be next step in his development. Good weekend and summer with the North Oakland Wolfpack. The class of 2021 has a lot of good point guards. Crenshaw has the potential to be one of the better ones. With the impending Isiah Jackson transfer to neighboring Mott, Waterford is going to be on the recruiting map this season and the next.
