Summer Weekend Tournament Preview

This weekend a couple of tournaments in the Portland area will feature some of the top boys basketball teams in the state and Southwest Washington. On Saturday night, the Wilsonville Summer Tourney will crown a champion and on Sunday, the title game of the Become Legendary Classic at Jefferson High School will take place.

The Wilsonville Summer Tourney takes place at Wilsonville High School this Friday and Saturday with all of the Varsity Bracket being held at Wilsonville High School in the main gym. Top teams from the 3A through 6A levels will be participating. Defending 5A state champs Wilsonville is of course the host, and the Wildcats will be led by their trio of rising seniors in Dakota Reber, Gabe Reichle, and Keegan Shivers. Some of the teams looking to usurp them include from 6A: Tigard, Tualatin, West Linn, Beaverton, Mountainside, David Douglas, Liberty, Wilson, Sprague, and Reynolds; from 5A: Silverton, Scappoose, and Willamette; from 4A: Seaside; and from 3A: Santiam Christian.

Just some of the many top players expected to play in Wilsonville in addition to the home team include Joe Juhala (2020 West Linn), Mason Vanbeenen (2022 West Linn), Jackson Shelstad (2023 West Linn), Andrew Ingalls (2020 Mountainside), Dane Erikstrup (2021 Beaverton), Grant Dunn (2020 Silverton), David Gonzales (2020 Silverton), Drew Carter (2021 Tigard), Mason Lomax (2020 Sprague), Kobe Withers (2020 Sprague), Ryan Hague (2020 Seaside), Koby Williamson (2020 Santiam Christian), and Josh Baugher (2021 Santiam Christian).

The semifinals of the Wilsonville Summer Tourney will be 5:30 pm on Saturday afternoon with the finals taking place at 7:00 pm.

The Become Legendary Tournament starts on Saturday and at Jefferson High School will also be a loaded field. The host Democrats will have their entire roster on hand, with the currently top ranked players in their respective classes in the PrepHoops Oregon rankings in Micah Garrett (2020), Lamar Washington (2022), and Marquis "Mookie" Cook (2023). Big men Kam Robinson (2021) and recent Wazzu-commit Nate Rawlings-Kibonge (2021) will be sure to defend Jefferson's home turf in the paint.

The other top teams in the field include fellow PIL foes such as Benson, Grant, Lincoln, and Roosevelt, as well as Sherwood, Westview, and Lake Oswego from the suburbs. Skyview, Evergreen, and Battle Ground come down from Vancouver for the event and from 5A come Hermiston and state tournament runner-up Churchill.

The field is loaded with talent as expected to play in addition to the Jefferson standouts include Kaden Perry (2021 Battle Ground), Jace Chatman (2021 Skyview), Jamison Guerra (2020 Sherwood), Trace Salton (2021 Lake Oswego), Jack Chlumak (2020 Lake Oswego), Jalen Grable (2021 Westview), Malik Kelley (2020 Roosevelt), Jayoni Moore (2020 Roosevelt), Brandon Hopson (2021 Roosevelt), Cobee Crawford (2020 Benson), Tai Warner (2020 Grant), Erik Fraser (2020 Grant), Brian Goracke (2020 Churchill), Kaelan O'Neil (2020 Churchill), and Silas Bennion (2020 Churchill).

The semifinals of the Beyond Legendary Classic will be at 12:30 and 1:40 pm on Sunday afternoon with the finals taking place at 5:10 pm.
