Prospect Spotlight: Antwon French (2021)
Last weekend at Kings of the Court in Des Moines, Antwon French was a big reason why Iowa Dynasty 16u made a run to the Final 4.
The 6’6 Iowa City High product was a beast on the boards and was scoring in bunches both at the rim and while showing a sweet mid-range game. But playing in the post is just one part of his skill-set.
“I’d say my strengths are rebounding and I’m actually a good passer too, and inside scoring. Outside of AAU, I’d say I play an all-around game,” said French.
“I’ve been working on my handles and shooting lately, because I wasn't always a post my whole life. I went from playing small forward and shooting guard to playing power forward, because I had a huge growth spurt.”
French transferred to Iowa City High from Marshall High School in Missouri after his freshman season. He played sophomore ball with the Little Hawkeyes last season, and was a key piece on a hugely successful squad.
Last weekend at Kings of the Court, French was the best player for Iowa Dynasty 16u, and says he’s still just scratching the surface, and that Dynasty is helping him to unlock his potential.
“I don’t feel like I’ve been playing to my full potential. And Dynasty, they’ve been treating me good, I never really took basketball too seriously, but Dynasty has turned me into someone who really cares about it now,” said French.
As he heads into his junior season at Iowa City High next season, French could emerge as a breakout player. And he says his class of guys could help put the Little Hawks back on the map.
“Our sophomore team was really good, we only lost three games, so hopefully we can change the varsity and hopefully get us to state, and get City High back on the map,” said French.
Recruitment: French, who at 6’6 is also well built and athletic, is also a tight end and defensive end on the gridiron. He says he’s hoping to play either football or basketball in college, but doesn’t have a preference right now.
“College is definitely something I want to do for any sport, football may be my easiest way to get a scholarship,” said French. “But with basketball, I think I could have a bright future, too.”
