It’s April, and that means another AAU season is underway. In this series, we will be highlighting prospects who we think could break out this spring. Below we take an up close look at six local class of 2020 prospects who could boost their stock if they perform.
MIKE BROWN | 6’3 SG | TAKOMA ACADEMY/MID ATLANTIC SELECT
At 6-foot-3, Mike Brown is an explosive scorer who can do a bit of everything on both ends of the court. Brown will be featured on a very talented Mid Atlantic Select squad and should become one of their most coveted prospects.
CHURCHILL BOUNDS | 6’10 C | DECATUR/VA ELITE
Churchill Bounds is a sleeper post prospect who came into his own this past high school season. At 6-foot-10, he is a skilled space eater with touch. Bounds plays with a high motor, can score with his back to the basket, rebound, pass, protect the rim, or face up and stretch the floor. His lateral mobility is a concern, but this could be remedied if he proves that he can consistently defend ball screens without being a liability.
XAVIER LIPSCOMB | 6’3 PG | SSSAS/TEAM DURANT
One thing coaches look for in a point guard are intangibles, and Xavier Lipscomb does not lack those. The shrewd 6-foot-3 floor general is a winner, and the perfect guy to run Team Durant’s free flowing offense. Lipscomb will look to push the tempo, apply pressure on the rim and involve his teammates. If he can take care of the ball, defend consistently at a high level, and be a serviceable spot up shooter, we expect his recruitment to expand.
MILTON MATTHEWS | 6’4 SG | ROCK CREEK CHRISTIAN/DC THUNDER
Milton Matthews is the ultimate heat check guy. The smooth lefty can fill it up in a hurry, and he’ll be featured on a solid DC Thunder team that will look to keep him involved. Matthews is one or two more big games away from significantly improving his stock.
RONALD POLITE | 6’1 PG | OXON HILL/TEAM TAKEOVER ORANGE
As far as true point guards go, Ronald Polite might be one of the best in the state of Maryland. The lanky floor general still needs to get stronger, but he knows how to run a team, and he will get the chance to showcase his talent on the HGSL with Team Takeover Orange. With an offer from George Mason already secured, we expect Polite to attract many more suitors this month.
