Class 7A Area 5-8 Tournament Recap

<p>With Area tournaments in full swing, there are lots of games happening all over the state on any given night! It can be very difficult to keep up with, thankfully, Prep Hoops has taken care of that for you! Below is a short recap of each game that took place in the Class 7A Area 5-8 tournaments along with some stats on the top performers. </p> <hr /> <p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Area 5</strong></span></p> <p><em>Semifinal #1:</em> <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Hoover</span> vs. Tuscaloosa County: 64-31</p> <p>After beating Tuscaloosa County twice in the regular season by a total of 21 points, Hoover had a pretty commanding win over Tuscaloosa County Thursday night. This win advanced Hoover to the Area 5 Championship game. <strong>Ahman Ellington</strong> led the way for the Buccaneers with 23 points and <strong>CJ Melton</strong> contributed 9 points. </p> <p><em>Semifinal #2:</em> <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Thompson</span> vs. Oak Mountain: 58-51</p> <p>Despite losing to Oak Mountain twice in the regular season, Thompson came out of this matchup victorious. In a close battle, Thompson was able to edge Oak Mountain by 7 points to advance to the Area 5 Championship game. <strong>Tre Roberson</strong> led the way for the Warriors with 12 points and <strong>Grant Hopkins</strong> and <strong>Jack Dorolek</strong> added 11 points to the Thompson's total. <strong>Zane Nelson</strong> had 23 points for Oak Mountain and <strong>Evan Smith</strong> added 13 points. </p> <p><em>Finals: </em><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Hoover</span> vs. Thompson: 68-54</p> <p>Hoover took care of Thompson twice in the regular season and they were able to take care of Thompson Saturday night. Thompson wasn't able to overcome the 14 point deficit and Hoover walked away with the 14 point victory and the Area 5 Championship.</p> <p><em>Area Champion: </em><strong>Hoover</strong></p> <p><em>What's Next?</em></p> <p>-Hoover will play Sparkman in the Regional matchup.</p> <p>-Thompson will play Huntsville in the Regional matchup.</p> <hr /> <p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Area 6</strong></span></p> <p><em>Semifinal #1: </em>Spain Park vs. <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Vestavia Hills</span>: 72-56</p> <p>After losing to Vestavia Hills twice in the regular season, the story wasn't much different on Thursday night. Vestavia Hills had a pretty dominant victory, which will advance them to the Area 6 Championship game. <strong>Luke Couch</strong> had 22 points for the Rebels and <strong>Coleman Barranco</strong> had 12 points and 8 assists. </p> <p><em>Semifinal #2</em>: <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Mountain Brook</span> vs. Hewitt Trussville: 78-51</p> <p>After beating Hewitt Trussville twice in the regular season, Mountain Brook had little trouble taking care of them in the area tournament. Mountain Brook defeated Hewitt Trussville by 27 points to advance to the Area 6 Championship game. </p> <p><em>Finals: </em><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Mountain Brook</span> vs. Vestavia Hills: 63-36</p> <p>Mountain Brook was able to take care of Vestavia Hills in the regular season, and they had no trouble taking care of them in the Area 6 Championship game. Mountain Brook defeated Vestavia Hills by 27 points to take home the Area 6 Championship.</p> <p><em>Area Champion: </em><strong>Mountain Brook</strong></p> <p><em>What's Next?</em></p> <p>-Mountain Brook will play James Clemens in the Regional matchup.</p> <p>-Vestavia Hills will play Florence in the Regional matchup.</p> <hr /> <p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong> Area 7</strong></span></p> <p><em>Semifinal #1</em>: Gadsden City vs. <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Huntsville</span>: 64-57</p> <p>Huntsville was able to defeat Gadsden City twice in the regular season and finished with a full season sweep, defeating them in the area tournament 64-57. Huntsville hit 4 three-pointers in a row in the first quarter and Gadsden City wasn't able to come back. This victory advanced Huntsville to the Area 7 Championship game. <strong>Nathan Moore</strong> led the way for Huntsville with 16 points and <strong>John Cole Norris</strong> added 13 points to the Panthers total. <strong>Dee Pearson</strong> put up 18 points and <strong>Demetrius Hoff</strong> added 13 points for the Titans. </p> <p><em>Semifinal #2</em>: <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Sparkman</span> vs. Grissom: 68-52</p> <p>After losing to Grissom in overtime in the first matchup, Sparkman defeated them the second time in the regular season and in their third matchup in the area tournament. Grissom kept it close until the end, but in the last few minutes, Sparkman pulled away to advance to the Area 7 Championship game. <strong>Malik Tyson</strong> had 16 points for the Titans and <strong>Tyson Elliot</strong> added 14 points. For the Tigers, <strong>Charlie Gossett</strong> had 13 points and<strong> Xavier Griffith</strong> had 12 points. </p> <p><em>Finals:</em> Sparkman vs. <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Huntsville</span>: 51-50</p> <p>After back and forth action the whole game, Huntsville found themselves on top by 1 point after the final buzzer to upset #4 Sparkman. Both teams played a great game and battled back and forth for the lead, but Sparkman fell short and Huntsville took home the Area 7 Championship. <strong>Luke Guyette</strong> led the Panthers with 12 points and <strong>William Grace</strong> added 11 points. <strong>Calen Lightfoot</strong> put up 11 points for the Senators and <strong>Kendall Wright</strong> and <strong>Trevon Ragland</strong> both had 8 points. </p> <p><em>Area Champion: </em><strong>Huntsville</strong></p> <p><em>What's Next: </em></p> <p>-Sparkman will play Hoover in the Regional matchup.</p> <p>-Huntsville will play Thompson in the Regional matchup.</p> <p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Area 8</strong></span></p> <hr /> <p><em>Semifinal #1</em>: <span style="text-decoration: underline;">James Clemens</span> vs. Austin: 59-51</p> <p>Austin beat James Clemens twice during the regular season, but that wasn't the story in the area tournament. James Clemens put together a good game and upset #10 Austin. <strong>Braxton Holland</strong> led the way for Austin with 17 points and <strong>Josh Birdsong</strong> added 14 points. <strong>Garrett Hicks</strong> and <strong>AJ McGinnis</strong> both had a huge game for the Jets. Hicks put up 20 points and McGinnis put up 15 points to help James Clemens advance to the Area 8 Championship game. </p> <p><em>Semifinal #2</em>: <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Florence</span> vs. Bob Jones: 70-52</p> <p>Florence took down Bob Jones in the regular season both times they met, and they took down Bob Jones in the area tournament. Florence beat Bob Jones by almost 20 points and rolled straight into the Area 8 Championship game. <strong>Jaden Coleman</strong> led the Patriots with 14 points and <strong>Jalen Myers</strong> contributed 9 points. <strong>Dee Beckwith</strong> put up 19 points and <strong>Kareem Thompson</strong> had 17 points for the Falcons. </p> <p><em>Finals: </em><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Florence</span> vs. James Clemens: 65-51</p> <p>In the regular season, Florence beat James Clemens in overtime and then lost in their next matchup, so people assumed this would be a good game. However, the Falcons were able to defeat the Jets by a 14 point margin to take home the Area 8 Championship. <strong>Charlie Champagne </strong>led the way for Florence with 23 points and <strong>Dee Beckwit</strong>h added 16 points. <strong>A.J. McGinnis</strong> had a great game with 27 points for the Jets, including 7 three-pointers. <strong>Garrett Hicks</strong> also added 12 points.</p> <p><em>Area Champion: </em><strong>Florence</strong></p> <p><em>What's Next:</em></p> <p>-Florence will play Vestavia Hills in the Regional matchup.</p> <p>-James Clemens will play Mountain Brook in the Regional matchup.</p> <hr /> <p>For more tournament results, check out our <a href="https://prephoops.com/2019/02/class-6a-area-1-5-tournament-recap/">Class 7A Area 1-4 Tournament recap</a>.</p>
