Buckhorn Team Preview: Trust Will Drive the Bucks

Buckhorn enters the upcoming season with an experienced roster, a strong interior presence and a collection of versatile guards capable of pushing the pace. Under head coach Cody Martin, the Bucks are building their identity around three important principles: playing fast, completing every defensive possession with a rebound and passing up good shots to create great ones. With four returning starters and several impactful additions, Buckhorn has the personnel to be a difficult matchup and a team capable of making a deep postseason run. However, the defining factor will be trust—trust in the system, trust in assigned roles and trust in one another when the pressure rises.   Experienced Leadership in the Backcourt    Senior combo guard [player_tooltip player_id='2472300' first='Kaden' last='Cantrell'] will be one of the central pieces of Buckhorn's success. The 6-foot guard brings toughness, experience and a team-first mentality to the floor. His willingness to play wherever he is needed gives Coach Martin valuable flexibility when building lineups. He can handle backcourt responsibilities, play alongside another ball handler or slide into a different role based on the matchup. His versatility is important, but his competitive approach may be even more valuable. He understands what it takes to compete at the varsity level and should be counted on to provide leadership, composure and toughness throughout the season.     Senior point guard [player_tooltip player_id='3572884' first='Drake' last='Allen'] gives the Bucks another experienced presence in the backcourt. As a returning starter, he will play an important part in establishing Buckhorn's pace and organizing the offense. For the Bucks to consistently turn good shots into great shots, Drake must keep the ball moving, make sound decisions and ensure that the team's scoring options receive touches in productive areas.    Junior combo guard Ckingston Crutcher is another returning starter who provides valuable experience. With Kaden, Drake and Ckingston back in the rotation, Buckhorn will not be starting from scratch on the perimeter. Their familiarity with Coach Martin's expectations should help the Bucks play faster without becoming careless. His impact will be especially important because Buckhorn wants to finish every defensive possession with a rebound. A strong initial defensive effort loses its value when the opponent collects an offensive rebound, so Isaiah must control the paint, establish position and pursue the ball consistently. Isaiah does not have to dominate the scoring column to control a game. Rim protection, rebounding, screening, interior defense and unselfish play can make him one of the Bucks' most valuable players. If he remains active and avoids unnecessary foul trouble, he can become the foundation of Buckhorn's defense. Defensively, his toughness should allow him to compete against physical frontcourt players and contribute on the glass. The Fields-Glass combination has the potential to give Buckhorn balance. Isaiah can establish himself around the basket while Keonte operates in different areas of the floor and if he can consistently rebound, defend and knock down open perimeter shots, his arrival could significantly raise the team's ceiling.    A Deep and Versatile Guard Rotation   Buckhorn's depth may become one of its greatest advantages. Ahmari Kemp, [player_tooltip player_id='3572879' first='Corey' last='Donaldson'], [player_tooltip player_id='3572884' first='Drake' last='Allen'] and [player_tooltip player_id='2976423' first='Marvin' last='Petty'] form a collection of combo guards willing to do whatever is necessary to help the team win. That mentality should allow Coach Martin to use different combinations without sacrificing effort or competitiveness. Each player may be asked to handle the ball, defend, rebound, provide energy or make the extra pass depending on the situation. Their willingness to accept those responsibilities will be critical.   Ahmari Kemp arrives as a senior and should have an opportunity to make an immediate contribution. His experience adds another mature presence to a perimeter group that will be responsible for creating the team's desired tempo. Play Fast Without Playing Recklessly   Buckhorn wants to operate at a fast pace, and its guard depth should make that possible. The Bucks can push the ball after rebounds, attack before the defense becomes organized and use their athleticism to create early opportunities. Playing fast, however, cannot lead to rushed decisions or careless turnovers. Buckhorn must understand the difference between creating tempo and forcing the action. The Bucks will be at their best when they advance the ball quickly, make simple reads and attack favorable situations.   2. Finish Defensive Possessions With Rebounds   [player_tooltip player_id='2846462' first='Isaiah' last='Fields'] gives Buckhorn an important advantage around the basket, but rebounding cannot be his responsibility alone. The perimeter rotation must help secure the defensive glass. Guards must find bodies, box out and pursue long rebounds instead of immediately leaking out in transition. If the Bucks consistently make the extra pass, they can become a balanced offense that is difficult to prepare for.   The Championship Key: Trust   Coach Martin identified trust as the most important ingredient in Buckhorn's pursuit of a state championship, and that belief connects every part of the team's identity.   The players must trust the coaching staff's game plan. The guards must trust that moving the ball will eventually create the right opportunity. The perimeter players must trust [player_tooltip player_id='2846462' first='Isaiah' last='Fields'] to protect the basket, while Isaiah must trust his teammates to contain the ball and help him rebound. The seniors must trust the younger players when they are called upon, and every player must trust that accepting his role strengthens the entire team.   Buckhorn possesses experience, size, guard depth and increased versatility. The pieces are present for Buckhorn to become a serious postseason threat.
