North Augusta, SC — The Grassroots Finale concluded the summer AAU schedule with 24 eighth grade teams competing in North Augusta, as Florida Vipers defeated Alabama Fusion Turbo in the championship game. Our eighth grade coverage begins with a look at the top athletes from the division. The players featured below displayed a combination of explosiveness, speed, strength, length, mobility, and physical tools that translated throughout their play, allowing them to impact games in multiple areas on both ends of the floor...

Kashmir Jones gave JL3 a significant athletic advantage during its run through bracket play at the Grassroots Finale. His explosiveness translated into productive plays offensively while also allowing him to cover ground and create problems defensively. Jones played with energy and consistently found ways to put his athletic ability to use within the flow of the game. That two-way impact was an important factor in JL3 advancing through the bracket.

Chase Petit's athleticism played a major role in how productive he was at the Grassroots Finale. He consistently won plays with his quickness, explosiveness and ability to cover space, giving him an advantage in several areas of the game. Petit was effective around the basket, on the glass and defensively, with his physical ability translating across each area. His athletic traits were a big reason he was able to influence the game in so many ways.

Gavin Service found ways to turn his athletic ability into consistent production at the Grassroots Finale. He moved well in space, played with good burst and was active around the basketball throughout his time on the floor. Offensively, Service could use those traits to create advantages, while defensively he had the movement skills to stay involved in plays. His activity and athletic ability gave him a productive two-way presence.

Mofiyin Sode is an athletic wing with good scoring versatility. He uses his athleticism well around the basket, in transition, and when attacking off the dribble, while also making plays above the rim. Sode's combination of size, athleticism, and scoring ability gives him a lot to work with as he continues to develop.

Christian Van Dorn was an intriguing long-term prospect at the Grassroots Finale because of the physical qualities he brings to the floor. His combination of burst, fluidity and overall movement created difficult assignments for opposing teams. Van Dorn could exploit mismatches and affect possessions in ways that few players his age could physically replicate. There is considerable room for his game to grow as his basketball skills continue to catch up with his natural gifts.

Stay tuned for more from Prep Hoops Next!
