Oxford High School

Head Coach: Joel Van Meter

#TerryTalks-My Thoughts On The Yellow Jackets:

After cutting down the nets and bringing home a Blue Map, the Yellow Jackets enter the summer with a target firmly planted on their backs. Expectations remain high in Oxford, and while every season presents new challenges, Coach Joel Van Meter's program once again appears loaded with talent, versatility, and the competitive edge necessary to compete at the highest level. The Yellow Jackets have become one of the premier programs in Alabama because of their commitment to defense, player development, and a team-first mentality. This summer will be about identifying leaders, building chemistry, and determining who is ready to step into larger roles as Oxford begins its pursuit of another trip to Birmingham. One thing is certain there is no shortage of talent in the Yellow Jackets' locker room.

Key Players:

[player_tooltip player_id='2726872' first='Marcus' last='Perry'] (6'3/SG/'27/Oxford HS)

IG: _.ihoopmarcus04

X: @Marcustotuff04

Marcus enters the summer as one of the most dangerous perimeter weapons in Alabama, regardless of classification. Widely regarded as one of the best shooters in the state, he has mastered the art of playing without the ball. He constantly keeps defenders working by moving with purpose, reading defensive positioning, and finding open windows to create scoring opportunities. His understanding of spacing and timing allows him to consistently generate quality looks from beyond the arc. What separates him from many elite shooters, however, is what he does on the defensive end. At 6-foot-3, he has developed into one of the most versatile defenders in the state.

[player_tooltip player_id='2748377' first='Caileb' last='Wilson'] (6'1/CG/'28/Oxford)

IG: cwilson_the1

X: @cwilson_the1

Caileb continues to establish himself as one of the premier young guards in the state. He is a talented combo guard with the versatility to play both on and off the ball, making him a difficult matchup for opposing defenses. His ability to score and facilitate creates constant pressure because defenses must respect him as both a scorer and playmaker. He is at his best when attacking downhill as he excels at creating off the bounce, getting into the paint, and forcing defenses to collapse. Once he gets into the lane, he consistently makes the right read, whether it is finishing, spraying to shooters, or finding teammates for easy scoring opportunities.

[player_tooltip player_id='2726864' first='Chris' last='Latson'] (6'4/‘27/F/Oxford)

IG: thaaatboichris

X: @thaatboii_chris

Few players in Oxford's program have shown the level of year-to-year development that Chris has. Over the last several seasons, he has steadily expanded his game and developed into one of the most reliable two-way forwards in the area. His length, athleticism, and versatility allow him to impact games in multiple ways. Defensively, he uses his size and wingspan to disrupt passing lanes, contest shots, and guard multiple positions. Offensively, he has developed into a highly effective 3-and-D player who can stretch defenses from the perimeter while also creating opportunities off the bounce. His athleticism is another major weapon. Whether he is finishing in transition, attacking the rim, or elevating through contact, he consistently provides highlight-reel plays and momentum-changing moments.

[player_tooltip player_id='3539957' first='Jermaine' last='Caver'], Jr. (6'0/CG/'29/Oxford)

IG: __junebug1

One of the youngest players in the program is already proving he belongs. Jermaine played meaningful minutes during Oxford's championship run and consistently delivered whenever his number was called. That experience has accelerated his development and helped establish him as one of the most promising young guards in Alabama's 2029 class. He possesses a mature floor game beyond his years.

Key Role Players to Watch

Conner Richerzhagen (6'3/SG/'27/Oxford HS)

X: @CRich2027

Every championship-caliber team needs players who embrace their role, and Conner has consistently done exactly that. Over the past several seasons, he has provided valuable minutes off the bench and has become a dependable perimeter shooting threat. Whenever Oxford has needed a spark offensively, he has proven capable of stepping in and knocking down shots.

Noah Pesnell

Noah could be one of the most important role players on Oxford's roster this season. While stars often receive the headlines, championship teams are built by players who fully embrace their responsibilities and impact the game in winning ways. The Yellow Jackets coaching staff will be counting on Noah to fill his role, bring consistency, and contribute to the team's overall success.

What Should We Expect From Oxford During the Month of June?

Expect pace, versatility, and relentless defense. Oxford will once again showcase a positionless style of basketball that allows multiple players to handle, pass, defend, and create offense. Their ability to interchange positions creates matchup problems and makes them difficult to scout. Offensively, the Yellow Jackets want to play fast and attack before defenses can get set. Their up-tempo style creates opportunities in transition while maximizing the athleticism and skill throughout the roster. Defensively, Oxford continues to build its identity around toughness and effort. Opponents can expect constant pressure, physical play, and a team committed to making every possession difficult. The Yellow Jackets won't simply try to outscore teams they will try to wear them down.

What Coach Joel Van Meter Is Looking To See During the Month of June

For Coach Van Meter, June is about more than wins and losses. It is about discovering who is ready to lead. With a talented roster filled with capable players, one of the biggest questions facing Oxford this summer is identifying who will emerge as the emotional leaders and tone-setters for the program. Who is willing to be the dog? Who wants the biggest moments? Who will hold teammates accountable? Who will embrace the responsibility that comes with competing for championships? The coaching staff wants to see cohesiveness, communication, and competitive fire. They want to see players step outside their comfort zones and establish themselves as leaders. If those answers emerge throughout June, Oxford will once again position itself as one of the most dangerous teams in Alabama and a legitimate contender to make another run to Birmingham. The Blue Map may already be in the trophy case, but don't expect the Yellow Jackets to be satisfied. This program is built to compete for championships, and the pursuit of the next one begins now.

Here Is Where You Can Check Out Oxford High School During The Month of June:

June 2nd vs Huffman

June 4 at Vestavia

June 5 vs Hewitt-Trussville

June 8 vs WP

June 10 at FCA

June 11 at Auburn

June 13 at AHSAA

June 23 at Woodward Academy (GA)

June 26-27 at GHSA
