Week 1 Rankings Update
It was a pretty eventful opening week of the 2025-26 high school basketball season, with a handful of significant upsets shaking up the rankings in a few classes. Below we'll detail some of the key movement in each class, with the complete rankings for all four classes listed at the bottom of this article. Note that while these rankings weren't updated until Monday night (they will usually be updated on Sundays), game results from Monday night were not taken into account.
In Class 1A, things remain the same from top-to-bottom. Second-ranked Bishop Garrigan and third-ranked Boyden-Hull each suffered a loss during the opening week, but both losses came at the hands of highly ranked teams from Class 2A, so they won't be punished for those losses.
The most shakeup comes in Class 2A, where the top three teams remain the same - Kuemper Catholic, Unity Christian, and Treynor, but there is a lot of movement after that. Despite a loss, Western Christian moves up a pair of spots to #4. The defending champions were handled pretty easily by a 3A ranked Sergeant Bluff-Luton team in their opener, but bounced back nicely with a blowout win over Spencer, and a nice road win over 1A #2 Bishop Garrigan. Regina also moved up a pair of spots to #5. Three newcomers enter the rankings this week - Cherokee at #7, Underwood at #8, and Cascade at #10.
The top seven teams in Class 3A remained the same this week, paced by Clear Lake, who cruised past Charles City in their season opener. The Lions are followed in the top five by ADM, Storm Lake, Xavier, and Ballard. MOC-Floyd Valley and Wahlert Catholic each move up a spot to #8 and #9, respectively, following Decorah's loss to Western Dubuque, while Solon debuts this week at #10 following an impressive pair of blowout wins over Maquoketa and Clear Creek Amana in the opening week.
A significant amount of movement happened in the largest class as well, with a pair of newcomers to the rankings this week - Davenport North, checking in at #5 following their win over then-#3 Prairie, and Roosevelt, debuting at #10 following an impressive comeback win on the road on Saturday afternoon against then-#8 Kennedy. Senior moves up three spots from #9 to #6 with a nice win over a good Brookfield Central team from Wisconsin, while Sioux City East drops a few spots despite going 2-0, beating Spencer and Heelan, a pair of 3A schools, by a combined eight points.
