Horace Hawks Ready to Soar into Historic Season

The buzz around Horace is impossible to ignore — and for good reason. The Hawks enter the 2025–26 season with sky-high expectations and a roster built to deliver the best year in program history. Widely viewed as one of the top contenders in Class AA, Horace has its sights set on a milestone that has eluded the young program: a trip to the State Tournament. This year, belief isn't just optimistic — it's justified!   This group returns major experience, scoring, and versatility across the board, forming one of the deepest and most explosive lineups in the state. The Hawks have guards who can create, shooters who can stretch the floor, and size capable of scoring inside and controlling the glass. With multiple athletes who can step into starring roles on any given night, Horace has the balance and firepower to attack teams in a variety of ways — just as comfortable in a high-tempo shootout as they are attacking the rim with ferocity in the half-court. Add in a motivated senior class hungry to leave its mark and underclassmen pushing for varsity reps, and the level of competition within the program has never been higher. Primed and ready for a big senior year! He's committed to UND for basketball and I think this will help him play free his senior year. Had a very productive spring and summer on the AAU circuit. Coming off of a MONSTER football season. He will run the one for us again this year. AG is a skilled guard that can score the ball so naturally, but we are most impressed at his passing and how he gets others involved."   #3 [player_tooltip player_id='1651919' first='Ryder' last='Majkrzak'] - "Received some minutes last year as a sophomore and has put a lot of time into getting stronger this offseason. He is hungry to play a big role for us this year! Tyler is going to be a dirty work kid for us this year. He will have a lot of responsibility on both ends of the floor. He is going to be a matchup nightmare this year in the EDC. Can post smaller guards (an area of his game that we want to utilize this year), can take bigs out to the perimeter and blow by them, has a nice outside shot, and is starting to play above the rim more and more."   #13 [player_tooltip player_id='1541297' first='Kaiden' last='Peterson'] – "He was injured at the start of last season and was slow to come back but had a couple of really hot shooting games. He finished the season as one of the top 3 point shooters in the EDC. He's also been another player really committed to the to the weight room. He had a great spring and summer of AAU basketball and his college recruiting is gaining traction. He's a typical 3 and D guy that can also get hot! He will be tasked with guarding some of the top players in the East and will be one of our top rebounders with his strength and size at the guard spot. With Jett committing to play college baseball we are hoping he is a guy that plays fun and free and keeps things light for everyone else on the team."   #23 [player_tooltip player_id='1651918' first='Brett' last='Livingston'] – "Returning as the leader in rebounding and blocked shots in the EDC. He was also #2 in field goal percentage in the East. Brett is coming off a successful football season and we think that his physicality and aggressiveness from football will bleed into the HS basketball season. Brett is a piece of the team we feel was underutilized last year. We think that getting Brett more touches will unlock an entire new part of game for us on the offensive end!"   "All of the guys mentioned above played some varsity minutes last year and we expect them to be our main rotation guys. We also have a couple of young guys chomping at a chance to show us what they have. "Last season was a double-edged sword of exceeding expectations but also falling short of our ultimate goal. Last season was the most successful season in program history, going 18-6. The year prior, we went 5-19, and we were able to flip the script but still have a lot of room for growth. We lead the EDC in almost all offensive categories, but when they say, “defense wins Championships,” they aren't lying!"   PHD: Does your program/team have any non-negotiables?   "Our expectations of players are to be accountable and to be coachable. These two things cover a wide range of standards that our players are held to. On top of that, we have three core values we try to stick to within our program. Effort, attitude, and teamwork are three things we want to hang our hat on at the end of the day. As for non-negotiables and being a young coach, I think I've towed the line too much and have struggled with the egos of players while trying to build a program. I'm excited to lean into this more now that we have experienced some success. I think that holding players accountable with our expectations on and off the floor will come easier."   PHD: What will your defense "hang its hat on"?   "We are switching our defense this year to establish a little more toughness at the varsity and sub-varsity levels. With the addition of Coach Benson he believes that we can turn this team that switched everything last year into a gritty team that fights through screens and can make teams take tough contested twos. This year, what we want to “hang our hat on,” is winning our one one-on-one matchups. Stealing this concept from one of the greats! “I don't allow our guys to go under screens or switch screens until at least January every year to build their toughness.” - Bill Self"   PHD: Who will be a couple of your lead guards?   "We have too many guards! If anyone wants to trade us for a true big man we are in the market. Our top two returning guards are [player_tooltip player_id='1680906' first='Aiden' last='Green'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1327797' first='Carter' last='Evanson']. [player_tooltip player_id='1541297' first='Kaiden' last='Peterson'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1651919' first='Ryder' last='Majkrzak'] will also be in the rotation and maybe even on the floor at the same time."   PHD: How did the offseason go for your team/program?   "This offseason was typical of other programs in the EDC. Lifting 4 days a week for those who chose to lift with the team, skills twice a week for the months of June and July. We also attended 6 team camps. Next summer, we plan to change a few things so that we can get a little better buy-in from players and also take our player development to the next level."   PHD: Who are a few of your top defensive players?   "[player_tooltip player_id='1651918' first='Brett' last='Livingston'] – Great defensive rebounder and shot blocker, lead the EDC in both categories. [player_tooltip player_id='1651920' first='Owen' last='Terras'] – Defensive versatility, arms that hang past his knees! Owen will most likely rival Brett in blocked shots this year since he was second last year in the EDC. [player_tooltip player_id='1680906' first='Aiden' last='Green'] – Our Ace defender for guard match-ups. He can win his one-on-one defensive matchups better than anyone on the team."   PHD: Who are a couple of up-and-comers to look out for?   "[player_tooltip player_id='1651919' first='Ryder' last='Majkrzak'] has grown taller and stronger, is really hungry for his opportunity! [player_tooltip player_id='2884050' first='Nolan' last='Gladue'] is a 9th grader that played with the JV and varsity and some team camps this summer. Not sure if he will crack the varsity lineup, but he will have a chance to compete for a spot to give some of our top guards a breather during games."   PHD: Who do you think will be your best rebounders?   "[player_tooltip player_id='1651920' first='Owen' last='Terras'], [player_tooltip player_id='1651918' first='Brett' last='Livingston'], and [player_tooltip player_id='1798699' first='Jett' last='Collins'] should all be on the rebounding list for the EDC website!"   PHD: What are your team goals this year?   "Accountability, keeping our team goals at the forefront of our mind. Keeping our team's goals ahead of our individual goals."   "WE want to defend our home court, establish a defensive identity, and qualify for the State Tournament."   PHD: Who are some of the top teams in AA?   "EDC is going to be a dog fight every night. Davies, WF High, Sheyenne, and Fargo South will all be at the top of the league. WDA is a completely different beast. I don't know if anyone stands in the way of Century from repeating. Bis High is always fun to watch, and Minot will have a new look. We play Dickinson and Minot at home for our non-conference games and both of them will be competing for top 4 spots out west."   PHD: Any last comments about the upcoming season?   "I'm really excited about the new addition to our coaching staff and think that we can take another step forward this year. If we can keep our goal at the forefront of our mind and not let our egos get in the way of the team success, I think we can accomplish our team goals. I'm really excited about the group that we have coming back. As a young coach, I take the blame for our shortcomings at the end of last season, but this is a group that has put in a lot of work for this upcoming season and I, myself have spent so much time this offseason trying to better myself as a coach for these guys. Once the season gets started and it's fight or flight time, I will always pick fight for this group of guys. Always."
