Prep Hoops Expo: Tony's Top Defenders

The annual Prep Hoops Iowa Expo took place in Des Moines on Saturday afternoon, with approximately 100 players from the sophomore through senior classes taking the floor. Myself, Eliot Clough, and Healey Hill were in attendance throughout the event taking notes on every player in attendance, and we'll have a slew of coverage coming throughout the next week. I was primarily responsible for covering Teams 1, 2, 9, and 10, while Eliot handled Teams 5, 6, and 8, and Healey had Teams 3, 4, and 7.    With Bowen's length, frame, and athleticism, he's what you look for in a wing defender, and he showcased his talents on that end of the floor throughout the afternoon. He showed that he can hold his own moving his feet against smaller, quicker guards, and he also showed that he can bang with bigger bodies in the paint and contest shots around the rim. On the offensive end, he showed good body control around the rim and the ability to finish through contact.     A long, quick guard, Musa covers a ton of ground on the defensive end, moving really well laterally and using his long wingspan to get into passing lanes. With his lateral movement, quick hands, and length, he has the tools to be a really impactful defender at the high school level. On the offensive end, he was really good in the mid-range, getting to his spots off the dribble and showing good footwork to create some space to get his shot off.     Washington does a great job sitting in his stance on the defensive end and moving his feet, making opposing guards really have to work hard to get things going. He has pretty good size as a lead guard, is a good athlete, and can play with or without the ball on the offensive end of the floor.     Walton is a long wing who can guard just about any position at the high school level. Like Bowen, he has the prototypical build of an impactful wing defender with his frame, length, and athletic ability. He has some two-way ability as a 3-and-D wing who shot it really well off the catch.     A quick, long wing who can provide some versatility on the defensive end with his ability to guard one through four, Thompson was a pleasant surprise on both ends of the floor throughout the event on Saturday. He has really good hands, picking opposing ball-handlers clean on multiple occasions and getting out in transition for finishes.
