These young men have been busting their tails off at practice week in and week out. Shaping the future of high school basketball starts at a young age and involves a lot of repetition. His dad was a standout for the Miners and the lead man on Tom Russo's 2000 Class C State championship team. He also has his name in the record book at NMU for all-time 3's. Enough about dad/coach, let's talk about this young man's skills. Jailen is an elite defender for his age. He can guard any position on the floor and does it exceedingly well. He has quick feet and carries a lot of agility. He has excellent shooting range for his age, a testament to his time spent in the gym working on core strength. It's great to see kids at this age picking up on some of these advanced items like screening away from the ball, back cutting, and seeing the entire court. Wyatt does all these items, and many more, quite well. He has a high basketball IQ and can finish and score around the rim with both hands. He's an excellent passer and can even sprinkle in a post-up move from time to time. He has great length and athleticism and has excellent court awareness. Zero Stars go-to guy on the defensive block, will intimidate his opponent, and rake in steals and blocked shots. He is quick and athletic, and an absolute nuisance to his opponents on defense. He plays up a year, so you know that carries the element of everyone is always bigger than you. He jumps right in with no fear and plays all-out. Keeps defenders at bay on the low post and does an excellent job of screening and rolling, cutting, and screening away. Handles the ball well for his size and has a nice post move. I watched these boys during their tryouts a few months back, and Hayden's work ethic stuck out to me instantly. 20 minutes in and you could wring out his jersey, always the first one to hustle back on D. He is lightning quick, which helps create a lot of trouble for his opponents. He can quickly stack up steals and run the floor in transition, almost always dribbling with his head up. Another young man who isn't intimidated or worried that half the kids on the floor are taller than him.
