PH Grind Region Finals: Alex's 17u Prospect Outlook Pt. 1

This article will dive deep into my examination of the 17u division last weekend at the Prep Hoops Grind Region Finals in Grand Prairie, Texas. Several teams competed for the championship crown and the right to claim the winner's bracket. Let's take a moment to evaluate some prospects who showed out and found their way onto my top standouts for the weekend!!    Nicholas stood out to me immediately when he was on the court due to his speed in the transition game and his ability to knock down threes from extremely deep range. He ran the offense with good efficiency and was smart in his decision making. His lateral quickness helped him immensely on the perimeter playing defensive passing lanes and getting fastbreak opportunities for his teammates. Canada is a great hustle player and motivational leader in team huddles as well!     Jesse was one of the best combo wing-post players who caught my eye at the tourney. His ability to pass out of the post when double teamed was unprecedented and he capitalized on every one of his mismatches in the post, often finishing through tough fouls and bumps from the strong defense. Mikus is a good break starter with outlet passes and knows where to be on the court at the right time. He is able to get down the court with long strides and effective lane running. Jesse also was consistent knocking down free throws and got to the foul line often.     Max was the most consistent shooter on the floor in the game I was able to watch for Team Oklahoma 17u. Stephens knew how to pick his spots carefully and calmly and consistently made the defense pay multiple possessions for leaving him open. Max also was a great hustle guard whenever his team needed him to help bring the ball up to beat the press, but his main attribute that caught my eye was spot up shooting and off ball movement. All coaches love a player that doesn't stop moving even without the ball in their hands and Max is one of those guys! Keep your eye out for this prospect moving forward!     Cannan was a big-time shooter and playmaker for Be Someone Elite this weekend. The combo guard showed a quick trigger from three-point land and ability to consistently dime open teammates for easy buckets. He was aggressive driving to the basket and was able to dish out of the paint multiple times with good court vision and speed. Edris was one of the main guards for this team during the game I was able to watch him on Saturday and will continue to turn heads with high level guard play.     Stewart controlled the pace of the offense for Dirty South Elite well during the tournament, constantly able to speed up or slow down at will. He showed that he can score from all three levels, whether it's hitting a long-range bomb to keep up the momentum or driving to the paint and making a floater/layup over the taller defender. Stewart was a physical defender on his matchup the entire contest and gave opposing ballhandlers fits hounding them the entire game. He knows how to play smart defense without fouling and is a great energy guy.
