Expert Analysis
Carey Smith | Prep Hoops Scout
This athletic and bouncy scoring wing is being slept on by college coaches. At the LVS tournament, Hughes posted a ridiculous stat line of 16 points, 11 rebounds and 4 blocks per contest. Those numbers should not come a surprise as Hughes has assembled a slew of double doubles this spring. Hughes owns elite half-court finishing skills. He got to the rim on back door and baseline cuts as well as out of pick-n-roll action. Once he was in close, Hughes finished with either hand using a soft touch. He also elevated above defenders for a flush. The trifecta of his speed, length and before mentioned finishing skills allowed Hughes to thrive in the open court. On defense Hughes was an intimidating shot blocker and plus rebounder.

How college coaches are still sleeping on Hughes is a mystery to me. During the 2024-25 high school season, Hughes was a 1st Team All-SOL selection as well as key piece of Upper Moreland’s run to the 5A state tourney semifinals. Next, Hughes was a standout performer on the April grassroots circuit. Then last weekend Hughes impressed again at the Spring Jam Fest with his half-court finishing skills and ability to play above the rim in transition. In the half-court, Hughes worked off-ball to score on dives to the cup and back door cuts as well as out of pick-n-roll action and the by grabbing offensive rebounds for put backs. He also flashed the ability to face up and then execute one or two dribble attacks on the hoop. At the other end of the court, Hughes hauled in numerous tough rebounds. Last weekend, Hughes posted a double double of 16 points and 13 rebounds against Excel Elite.

Fresh off his junior year in which he was a 1st Team All-SOL selection and led Upper Moreland to the 5A state semifinals, Hughes was impressive again at the Philly Spring Clash. Hughes (PA Royals) is an athletic and bouncy prospect who played above the rim. He did not hesitate to finish on the fast break or in the half-court with a crowd-pleasing dunk. His physical assets combined with his finishing skills enabled Hughes to excel in the open court. On half court possessions Hughes scored on baseline cuts, out of pick-n-roll action, by attacking the rim off one or two dribbles and via the offensive glass. Hughes also proved to be a plus defensive player with a long wingspan. He produced steals, cleaned the glass, and blocked shots.

After a junior year in which he was a 1st Team All-SOL selection and led Upper Moreland to the 5A state semifinals, it should not a surprise that Hughes continued to play well out in Pittsburgh. Hughes is an athletic, long, and active double double machine. Running with the PA Royals, Hughes scored on the interior out of pick-n-roll action as well as via slashes to the rim and the offensive glass. He also proved he could work the baseline and dunker spot for buckets. Hughes displayed better than expected speed as he got out the fast break for hoops. In all these scoring opportunities, Hughes displayed the lift and strength to finish in traffic with authority.
