About Brecken
Expert Analysis
Daniel Siehndel | Prep Hoops Scout
McGuire has exploded this spring as one of the state’s better shooters, particularly from long range. With his quick release and ability to run off screens and dribble handoffs, Brecken creates space in different ways. He’s shown he needs little to no space, and when he gets going, he can both get hot and stay hot. He’s also added value in the open floor, both handling the ball and getting to the rim. He can finish at the rim and has a growing floater game that also looks to be trending up. As his offensive game continues to grow, there’s more to McGuire’s package seemingly from week to week — showing a more layered and evolving scoring arsenal. Brecken’s nose for the ball also drives his defensive impact, adding two-way value that has pushed his overall game to a new level.

One of the top shooters in Kansas City over the weekend, McGuire caught fire from beyond the arc, really coming into his own on Sunday as he shot the lights out and carried his team for different stretches. His ability to drift and relocate put pressure on scrambling defenses, most notably when he created even a small window of space. Brecken showed a quick release in drive-and-kick situations and was just as effective shooting off the bounce, staying balanced and rising up over defenders consistently. He also brought grit on the defensive end and showed potential as a strong positional rebounder and ball handler. If he continues to add size and strength, he should set himself up for a strong winter ahead.

Brecken held his own throughout the weekend, going up against elite guard competition. Right now, his defensive game stands out — showing strong anticipation, awareness, and the ability to cut off drives and disrupt passing lanes, often turning defense into offense. On the other end, he finished well around the rim, displaying a crafty left hand and solid touch in traffic.

McGuire was one of Olpe’s go-to scoring options last year. He’s a consistent shooter, can play off the bounce, and never seems rushed offensively. His performance in 2023-24 made him the only freshman to be named to the All-Lyon County first-team. With an even larger role likely on the horizon, McGuire is set for a huge season in the winter.
